Educating nursing professionals from diverse backgrounds, now and into the future, the PVAMU College of Nursing (CON) has a longstanding influence in the healthcare sector with one of the oldest nursing programs established in 1918, with the first student cohort of just eight people graduating in 1922. The CON is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

Transcending the challenge of time, PVAMU nursing graduates have extensively contributed to the quality and excellence in nursing and healthcare delivery throughout Texas, the nation and the world.

Located in the world-renowned Texas Medical Centre, the PVAMU College of Nursing shares a unique relationship with numerous health-related institutions. For college Dean, Betty Adams, “The college remains competitive in the quality and variety of programs offered inclusive with the advances of technology, smart classrooms, transforming laboratories, study and research rooms and mutual partnerships.”

Programs that spark high productivity and purpose

PVAMU College of Nursing continues to celebrate its growth and enhancement through the expansion of programs and twenty-four-hour access to online libraries, as well as other electronic programs and operations.

Offering a range of degrees, students who have just started their venture into the healthcare sector may opt for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.). This program is a four-and-a-half-year program that supports individuals, allowing them to practice professional nursing in a variety of clinical settings and encouraging them to continue their education through postgraduate studies.

On the other hand, the Master’s programs permit you to specialize in specific fields. For instance, there’s the Master of Science (MSN) Family Nurse Practitioner program where advanced-practice nurses are taught how to provide primary healthcare to clients, families and communities.

There’s the Master of Science (MSN) Nurse Administration program that prepares nurses to serve in a variety of leadership and managerial roles within the healthcare delivery system. And there’s also the Master of Science (MSN) Nurse Education, where nurses are taught how to teach in a variety of settings, including the teaching of patients and their families, nursing students, nursing staff and health consumers.

This niche college of nursing also offers a Doctoral Program (Doctor of Nursing Practice) that builds depth, as well as extending your scope of knowledge and skills in information management to become adept in the application of evidence-based science in practice.

A faculty filled with professional healthcare practitioners

While striving to maintain effective teaching and a strong curriculum, faculty at the PVAMU College of Nursing believes their role should include the fostering of academic excellence and intellectual curiosity among students.

With faculty members who are leading experts in their fields, committed to the values believed to be inherent in professional nursing such as altruism, human dignity, truth, justice, freedom, equality and aesthetics, your education is in safe hands.

The CON’s dedication to first-class nursing academics also represents a celebration of contributions represented by philanthropic and charitable gifts from foundations, alumni, organizations and national agencies that have supported the institution’s delivery of quality balanced programs, generating phenomenal outcomes in nursing and higher education.

Recent sampling of local gifts from the Houston Endowment, Inc., The Nau Scholars Texas Fund, Methodist Hospital Houston Center for Clinical and Translational Science, Shell Oil Foundation and in collaboration with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center have greatly contributed in the CON’s research in cancer prevention and pedagogical development in simulation technology; while the Kellogg Foundation supported the offering of graduate programs, Family Nurse Practitioner Program.
