Tom Narraway’s pre-executive MBA career has always revolved around construction. Skanska, one of the world’s largest construction companies, sponsored his undergraduate degree in construction engineering management, and he was offered a full-time position with them upon graduation after performing well during his placement year.
Fast forward to being 30, Narraway grew conscious of the fact that he’s only ever worked for one company, and his professional development only centred around construction. Keen to push his career forward, he found his answer with Bayes Business School’s Executive MBA programme.
Bayes’ international reputation for academic excellence and world-class teaching draw many like Narraway to their campus. The school holds a “triple crown” accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the Association of MBAs, and the European Foundation for Management Development’s Quality Improvement System. Its Executive MBA programme is ranked #6 in the UK and #40 in the world by the Financial Times Executive MBA ranking 2023.
This highly-ranked programme is offered in two formats: the Evening Executive MBA, taught in person every Tuesday and Thursday, and the Modular Executive MBA, taught from Friday to Sunday on campus with some online learning. Both formats allow students to benefit from Bayes’ location all the same. Situated between London’s Square Mile and Tech City, the business school is surrounded by financial institutions and cutting-edge start-ups. These allow for bonds to be forged with those organisations and networking opportunities to flourish in abundance.
Connections are formed within the classroom too; the programme has an intimate collaborative learning environment, with small immersive classes allowing more personalised interactions. In 2023, 15 nationalities were represented in the programme, with a 13-year average work experience. Around a quarter of students commute to campus, creating a diverse cohort of different industry backgrounds. Through this, a tight-knit community is strengthened, and students keep in touch long past graduation.
Narraway may have graduated in 2019 but he still remembers his cohort’s camaraderie. “I relished the chance to debate, discuss and work in small, focused groups with a diverse collection of professionals from all sorts of backgrounds – legal, sales, finance, medical, and politics,” he says. “The opportunity to learn from others and see how they operate was such an advantage. You build strong relationships, and I’m still in touch with many of the cohort.”

As Bayes’ Executive MBA programme is delivered part-time, they offer the flexibility for you to navigate your studies and job commitments.
“Flexibility was something that was really important to me – I didn’t want to take a career break, so ideally, I wanted to pursue an Executive MBA,” says Danielle McIver, whose goal was to transition into a global organisation and meet like-minded professionals with similar ambitions. She also sought further insight into the broader business world, having only been exposed to finance due to her work in private financial services.
At Bayes, McIver not only achieved her goals but also discovered a newfound passion for entrepreneurship.
The second year of the programme gives students the opportunity to take various electives, culminating with a major project of self-managed consultancy. McIver launched a sustainable fashion start-up, a topic far from what she imagined she would attempt at the start of her Executive MBA journey.
Between this customisation and the comprehensive coverage of business as a whole, the application of theory to practice with real companies, and a strong focus on the soft skills required for senior leadership, the Executive MBA gets graduates prepared for all kinds of scenarios from the get-go.
“The negotiation, presentation and media workshops held as part of our professional development modules were challenging, and I had some instant new skills to take back to my career,” says McIver. “My approach to business since graduating is more entrepreneurial and leads me to question the norm and find smarter ways to work more frequently than I was before. It’s also enabled me to be more objective, having had the opportunity to complete projects on various companies throughout my Executive MBA.”
Working with the Careers and Professional Development team is a key part of your Bayes Executive MBA. Using their expertise and years of experience in talent management, the team provides support in many ways, from one-to-one coaching to workshops. Professional development is built into the curriculum, beginning even before the programme starts with pre-programme activities and online community networks.
With a well-designed programme from start to end, graduates are fully equipped to pivot careers, industries, and even countries, with many going for higher-level positions. But that’s not all Bayes offers – graduates may attend one free elective each year, as per the school’s philosophy of lifelong learning.
