Situated in the world’s best country for children to grow up in, according to the End of Childhood Report Index (2018), Nexus International excels at enriching student lives in Singapore.
Globally-known as a leading educator, Nexus International Singapore is an accredited member of the Council of International Schools, and a recipient of exclusive Apple Distinguished School (ADS) status.
How did Nexus International Singapore achieve Apple Distinguished School status?
To secure this high-profile accolade, a school must demonstrate educational excellence, a commitment to innovation and exemplary learning environments that aim to stimulate, inspire and impact student lives.
Since Nexus International Singapore showcases all three factors, they are one of the select few schools that have managed to effectively intertwine new technologies into their educational framework, a fact that helped them earn ADS accreditation.
Nexus also uses the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition (SAMR) model, pushing teachers to explore new technologies that can enhance learning.
Through this model, lessons are made easier as learners are encouraged to quickly research a topic on a laptop or work collaboratively on a shared Google document.
Though tech can sometimes have an alienating effect on users, Nexus International School (Singapore) encourages learners to be active and social rather than dependent on online connections. That’s why the institution makes a huge effort to ensure technology is used positively and proactively in the classroom.
During a Humanities class where students learned about ancient civilisations, for example, learners were up on their feet and working in groups with a BBC augmented reality app. Through digitally-enhanced visuals of historic artefacts, they were able to tackle complex questions about what life was like in these times and discussed their thoughts as a group.
By fulfilling all requirements for the Apple Distinguished Schools status, Nexus successfully attracts hundreds of learners from around the world to its school every year.
And global attention is set to increase with the arrival of the new campus. Designed by renowned international architects, the campus will feature flexible learning spaces, a large capacity theatre, a state-of-the-art sports field, a 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool, a tech-savvy Innovation Hub and more.
What does Nexus International do differently?
At the forefront of innovation, every child that has enrolled with Nexus International has experienced an academic venture like no other.
For the Early Years (ages 3 to 7), teachers consider elements of the Reggio Emilia Approach, which puts the natural development of children as well as the close relationships they share with their peers at the centre of its philosophy. This is also merged with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) to enable a balanced education.
With regards to Primary Years students (ages 7 to 11), the curriculum is based on the globally recognised IBPYP. Here, children learn to read, write and build the foundations of numerical and scientific understanding, while also immersing themselves in fun and practical Nexus activities.
Secondary school learners (ages 11 to 16) are offered a modified English National Curriculum, taught around ‘Big Ideas’ or concepts in Years 7-9. Year 10 and 11 students, on the other hand, follow an extensive range of courses that prepare them for their IGCSE examinations.
Finally, in Years 12 and 13 (ages 16 to 19), learners follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). By completing this course, students graduate from Nexus with an internationally-accepted qualification and enter top universities and further education institutions worldwide.
With its diverse course content for learners of all ages, those who graduate from Nexus International in Singapore are adaptable and are therefore ready to take on real-world challenges.
It’s time to connect to the Nexus International School (Singapore) network
With prime access to digital resources and revolutionary learning technologies, it’s no surprise that so many parents and pupils are eager to connect to the Nexus network in Singapore.
Often referred to as the ‘Nexus Way’, the school provides a personalised, digital and inclusive education for all students.
If you want to watch the Nexus innovation in action, check out the Nexus Vertical Farm video.
As just one of the many inventive and informative learning activities available at Nexus, this initiative started off as a Year 4 project when students wanted to understand more about growing plants in Singapore’s urban jungle.
From that moment on, the project sparked a passion for organic produce and empowered Nexus students to build their own Vertical Farm at school. The children have now established their own organic farmers market to sell the produce and all proceeds go to buying new solar panels for the school!
Another example of innovative technology that learners are exposed to at Nexus is the use of augmented reality apps. To better understand biology, students were able to dig deeper into the realms of human anatomy by using an iPad to look at separate structures and to see how they work in correlation to each other.
By transforming lessons through 3D experiences rather than sticking to 2D textbooks, the educational possibilities at Nexus are unlimited – you can even dissect a frog in AR!
As Nexus International Singapore understands that children and technology are the future, this is a forward-thinking, nurturing institution that all students deserve to be a part of.
