MS in Marketing at Drexel University: Real experiences, real impact

Ghadeer Alamro, 34, was accepted into the marketing programme at several universities. For the Saudi Arabian, Drexel University’s top-ranked, AACSB-accredited LeBow College of Business stood out to her the most for its academic excellence and innovative approach to education. “I was particularly drawn to the dynamic Master of Science in Marketing curriculum offered by Drexel LeBow, which effectively integrates theoretical learning with practical, hands-on experiences,” she says.

The Master of Science in Marketing programme integrates consulting projects, international residencies, guest speakers, case competitions, and other engagements that help students learn from and network with marketing professionals from companies such as the Philadelphia Zoo, QVC and more. In one course, Alamro collaborated on research-driven consulting projects with industry partners, including a well-known bank. “This not only strengthened my academic knowledge but also provided invaluable real-world insights and skills that directly benefit my professional growth,” she says.

Such experiences are crucial for anyone seeking to thrive in a rapidly evolving sector. Over the years, marketers have had to adapt and expand their skills because of the rise of big data, digital marketing, marketing analytics, robotics, social media, and artificial intelligence. Because of the comprehensive market-centric curriculum and hands-on learning experiences at Drexel LeBow, students like Alamro are prepared to face these ever-changing challenges.

The Master of Science in Marketing programme at Drexel LeBow has two STEM-designated concentrations. The STEM-designated Digital Marketing Technology concentration is ideal for those seeking roles such as social media analyst, media planner, manager of integrated media strategy, and digital marketing strategist. It explores the history and theoretical framework behind new media like blogs, mobile apps, social media, streaming services, virtual and augmented reality, and websites. Students learn best practices in building campaigns and measuring results, as well as consumer and influencer behaviour in the social realm.

The Marketing Technology and Analytics concentration – also STEM-designated – teaches students how to use cutting-edge tools to turn big data into actionable insights. As students work on large business datasets, understand experimental design and analysis, and present data findings and recommendations, they hone crucial soft skills, such as effective communication, just as much as technical prowess.

Alamro has benefited from being part of the programme and the university’s city campus in the heart of Philadelphia. “The programme at Drexel LeBow is allowing me to gain a holistic understanding of consumer psychology and market trends and research, which prepared me to design marketing strategies that engage diverse audiences effectively and engagingly,” she says.

Alamro credits her progress to her professors and advisors. Many of whom are internationally renowned researchers and industry experts who use Drexel LeBow’s state-of-the-art facilities, such as LeBow’s Behavioural Lab, which includes neuroimaging, eye tracking, and more.

Progress is just one aspect of the college’s multi-faceted approach to measure and improve student success in the marketing programme. “Key metrics include post-graduation employment rates, job placements in relevant fields, and alumni feedback,” says Lawrence Duke, Acting Department Head. “Continuous programme reviews, industry partnerships, and alumni engagement will inform curriculum updates to align with industry demands. Internship and study abroad opportunities, practical projects, and professional development initiatives will enhance students’ practical skills and market readiness.”

It helps that Drexel LeBow encourages students to get involved outside of the classroom as much as possible. Whether it is becoming a member of a student organisation or participating in a learning community, there are many opportunities to develop leadership skills and explore interests before entering or returning to the professional world. Students can also rely on Graduate Career Services, a service committed to helping students seize the many career opportunities available to them through resources and programming such as career counselling, professional development, and job search coaching. Pair these with Drexel’s alumni network of over 180,000 and students have extensive access to leaders and innovators who remain connected and ready to support their fellow Drexel Dragons.

Alamro has joined one-on-one counselling sessions and has been provided with invaluable guidance on career exploration, resume building, job search strategies, and professional development. She believes the education, services, and opportunities she’s received at Drexel LeBow will set her up for future career success.

“My coursework has provided me with an understanding of market analysis, consumer behaviour, and the strategic planning of marketing campaigns. Further, my participation in group projects, as well as my involvement in case studies, have strengthened my teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for a successful career,” she says. “Aside from this, I have been able to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios through internships and involvement in marketing organisations, which have further enhanced my ability to be ready for the challenges of the marketing industry.”
