Malia Obama, the elder daughter of former United States President Barack Obama, joined hordes of incoming Harvard University freshmen moving into their dorms on Tuesday evening, reports USA Today College.

The member of class 2021 was sighted with her parents, Harvard alumni Barack and Michelle, who were helping her to unpack and settle in.

When a Boston Globe reporter requested for an interview, the 19-year-old politely declined, saying “I can’t”.

She is expected to stay in Yards, a residential neighbourhood usually reserved for freshmen. The official freshman move-in day was a reportedly muted affair with little fanfare despite the checking in of the offspring of a former US president.

“As a parent, we’re well aware, but our son doesn’t seem to be as concerned as we are,” Shannon Whisenant, a parent to a freshman moving into the same dorm as Malia, told Boston Globe.

“We were kind of excited when we found out.”

Shannon’s husband, Ron added: “The students seem very laid back, so that should help [Malia].”

Her arrival on the Cambridge, Massachusetts, campus on Tuesday comes after a gap year spent as an intern in the film industry and a summer vacation at Martha’s Vineyard.

Children of US presidents are usually subject to rife press coverage over where they choose to study, although Malia has managed to maintain something of a low profile.
