Lewis University: High-quality degree programmes recognised by Chinese employers

When Linkang Zhang from China sought to get a degree in Supply Chain Management, he faced a huge setback: no schools in his hometown offered it as a major.

But Lewis University did. When he heard about how the Illinois-based institution welcomes students from around the world, and especially China, he knew it was the place to be for him. Plus, where better to get a Bachelor of Science in this field than at a university based in a major transport network in the US?

“In my second semester, we visited the Canadian National Railway Yard near Chicago. It was part of my course, and we learned how a logistics hub is managed,” he says. “It was fascinating, and I knew I made the right choice in my major.”

Supply Chain Management is not the only programme offered at the university. Today, there are over 100 programmes, spanning undergraduate and postgraduate levels, such as artificial intelligence, software engineering, and business analytics. All programmes make you feel like you are learning straight from the industry. They equip you with forward-thinking knowledge and skills, thus preparing you to become a problem solver and critical thinker ready to make a difference in society. As many past graduates will tell you, this is the best reason to be part of a recognised Midwest Regional university like Lewis University.

“Recently, I was hired by CNR and I have responsibilities to find efficiencies in their transportation network,” Zhang says. “I am putting my degree to use and applying my courses to my job. I love what I am doing because my work affects nearly everything in North America. It is very rewarding to see all my work results in real life. It is how I contribute back to the world.”

A standout programme in one of the best four-year colleges in Illinois is cybersecurity, which is available as a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Embedded within the Computer Science field, students taking on this subject will be qualified to analyse, plan, and implement computer security strategies to safeguard organisations and their data. You will develop cybersecurity-specific skills like cryptography, ethical hacking, and secure coding – all of which will prove useful in your future career in computer technology.

“I chose to study here because I knew Lewis had a good reputation, and I could pursue my passion and confidence in finding a job in my field,” student Hui-min Long says.

Long, who is graduating with her Master of Science Cybersecurity in May 2025, loved being part of the Cyber Defense club. This is one of Lewis’s many student clubs that connect you to the larger campus community, show you the intersections between your major and others, link your theoretical knowledge with real-world experiences, and more. “I was able to help the club team prepare for their annual competition by simulating targeted attacks on their network,” she says.

Originally an aviation school for boys in the early ’30s, the university maintains its Master of Science in Aviation and Transportation as on of its highlight programmes. Here, students will develop skills in communication, human resource management, strategic planning for transportation projects, and quality management systems for aviation and transportation safety. These skills are gained through extensive coursework and research, on top of partnerships with leading airline companies like United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Air Wisconsin Airlines. Recent graduates have gone on to find success at Federal Aviation Administration, Chicago Department of Aviation, major US airlines, top-tier universities, and global transportation logistics companies.

Students with an F-1 visa who want to gain more practical experience in real-world settings can join the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or the Optional Practical Training (OPT) programmes. The CPT is internship-like and directly related to specific courses that are part of the required curriculum, while the OPT is an opportunity for you to gain early exposure to working full-time at a US company related to your major.

“My CPT internship is with a company here in Chicago,” Long says. “After graduating, I will return to Shenzhen, China. I will use my MS Cybersecurity degree to help me advance in this field.”
