Graduates of Kingswood School — an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the city of Bath — are prepared to meet 21st century demands, thanks to its robust academic programme and holistic approach to education. The school’s welcoming, inclusive community that fosters confidence, open-mindedness, and tolerance also plays a big role in helping students achieve this.

Set on a 200-acre site in Lansdown, Kingswood offers a broad, holistic education for students from nine months to 18. Its location in Bath also makes the school highly alluring. Bath is considered as “one of the most elegant and architecturally distinguished of British cities”; it is also home to museums, galleries, vibrant musical and cultural life.

“Our pupils learn as much outside the classroom as they do within it, and I can think of no more inspiring and secure place for our children to grow, to reflect on their experiences, and to leave us ready to influence the world,” says Andrew Gordon-Brown, Headmaster of Kingswood Senior School and Principal of the Kingswood Foundation.

Kingswood creates learning-friendly classrooms which cultivate curious, confident and independent learners. Their rigorous programmes equip students with relevant skills that are highly applicable upon graduation, letting them enter university and beyond with confidence.

This is echoed by Head of Sixth Form, Craig Woodgate, who says: “High academic standards, a varied range of co-curricular activities, a comprehensive careers and higher education programme and individual tutorial support all ensure that our sixth formers have the opportunity to thrive and fulfil their potential so that they are ready for the challenges of life at university and beyond.”

Students are constantly challenging themselves – and being challenged – as they grow, expand their minds and learn to think big, practically and independently. Unsurprisingly, this has resulted in solid examination performance across the school. Kingswood regularly places in the top 10 co-educational boarding and day schools; an average of more than 80% of all Kingswood students achieve the coveted A* or B grade required for entry into top Russell Group universities.

Strong pastoral care

Kingswood is more than a school students attend — it’s a community where individuality thrives, and life-long friendships are forged. The school’s pastoral care strength is shown through constructive, open and trusting relationships that flourish between teachers and students.

There are also ample opportunities for students to develop their talents outside the classroom. Kingwood offers over 100 co-curricular activities for students to choose from. This includes a broad choice of art, music, drama, and design and technology departments.

Students can get involved in drama productions, concerts, festivals, exhibitions, professional masterclasses and field trips that broaden their horizons. Over the weekends, students participate in Model United Nations, scriptwriting, fashion and textiles, kayaking, climbing or outdoor pursuits.

Another important element of the Kingswood experience includes character development. This is done in a myriad of ways, including via sporting activities that deepen the school experience, encouraging students to challenge themselves and uncover their talents. Students can also dabble across various activities such as gymnastics, dance, swimming, athletics, hockey, rugby, football, netball, cricket, tennis, to name a few.

Every two years, students in the sixth form travel to Malawi to support the Open Arms Infant Home in Blantyre as part of the school’s continued voluntary work initiative abroad. Last year, the prep school’s group of Charitable Commissioners raised money for the Pardada Pardadi Educational Society that enables rural development through education, employment and empowerment of rural girls and women between the ages of five to 18 in India.

At every stage of the Kingswood experience, students have access to professional advising, graduate school planning, and opportunities for networking. As part of the school’s Career Guidance Programme, these services help identify their interests and strengths, explore a diverse range of options to build experience and clarity about their goals, and empower them to pursue paths they find personally meaningful.

Here, students gain access to online career information resources, career planning lessons, skills workshops, one-to-one career guidance meetings and a wide range of events and activities, including career seminars, attendance at career fairs and a work experience week for students in the sixth form

Since its inception, Kingswood has educated students from all around the world, making its campus home to a diverse community. “The main thing I’ve learned since coming to Kingswood is the acceptance of many different cultures and nationalities,” says Darrell Harding, Head of Boarding. “Seeing all these different cultures and people come together as one amazing community is fantastic.”
