Positioned on a striking 300-acre campus in the tropical paradise of Brunei, Jerudong International School (JIS) is an elite, global institution for students ages two to eighteen years. Guiding more than 1,700 students who represent 55 nations worldwide, JIS prides itself on the achievements of its students, urging them to strive towards excellence in every aspect of their lives.
“The mission of our school is to Achieve Excellence,” explains Mr Barnaby Sandow, Principal of JIS. “For us, that means enabling every student to become the very best they can be…Specifically, we are encouraging them to participate in a wide variety of activities to broaden their experience, find things they love and build up their self-esteem…
“Every student is given opportunities to develop their leadership skills,” he adds. “As their esteem and motivation grows they can take ownership of their personal destiny to a greater extent.”
Another way that JIS sets itself apart from many others is that it provides options for student financial aid. A world-class education can indeed come at a significant price, and as a School that believes in providing the best possible education for everyone, regardless of race, religion or social background, JIS offers a number of financial scholarships to ease financial strain.
Senior School Scholarships
From August 2017, for the first time, a comprehensive range of scholarships and awards will be made available for full-time boarding, senior school students hailing from outside Brunei. Open to Year 7 students through to those in Year 10, as well as those hoping to pursue the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma curriculum, this brand-new package will be awarded to candidates who display exceptional talent in both their academic abilities and potential.
The scholarships offer an annual reduction of an impressive 35 percent on full-time tuition and boarding fees, amounting to a maximum reduction of around US$13,400 – US$14,200, which will be deducted from the standard fee range of US$38,444 – US$40,852 per annum for tuition and boarding (*This assumes US$1=B$1.35).
This scholarship reward remains with its successful recipient for their entire academic career, but is subject to a yearly review by the Principal and the Board of Governors. To retain the package, scholars must continue to show outstanding progress and play an active part within their discipline throughout their time at JIS.
If you think your child could be eligible for this award, do submit your application as soon as possible. The cut-off point is March this year so packages can be dispensed in time for the August 2017 enrolment.
Academic Scholarships
The following awards are also granted on a performance basis, for which eligibility is determined via an academic entrance test, which includes: Cognitive Ability Test, an online mathematics test and/or written English assessment followed by an interview.
I/GCSE Scholarships – available for candidates age 14+, who would be entering Year 10 – the first year of the two-year I/GCSE programme.
Sixth Form International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Scholarships – available for candidates at 16+, due to enter Year 12. Possible candidates must sit an online Cognitive Ability Test, a written test in English and attend an interview. An I/GCSE tariff of 5A* and A grades or the equivalent if coming from MYP / US Curriculum Schools is set as a condition of the scholarship.
Other Scholarships & Awards:
In addition to the Academic Scholarships, JIS also offers a limited number of awards for 11+, 14+ and 16+ in a range of other disciplines, including:
- Art
- Design Technology
- Drama
- Music
- Sports
These prestigious awards can be worth a reduction of up to US$5,000 per annum for boarding and tuition fees. In addition, Music Scholarships offer free music tuition on two instruments (voice included).
Pupils in receipt of Art, Design and Technology, Drama and Music awards are expected to continue their studies in those disciplines to I/GCSE, and in sport to play an active role in the school’s games programmes and fixture list. Each discipline will have a set of expectations which each scholar is required to fulfil which will form part of the annual review process. Elite musical talent must be demonstrated with a minimum of Grade 7 on their principal instrument with preferably a Merit or Distinction level. Ability on a second instrument is desirable but not essential.
An unparalleled Boarding School experience…
An accessible education where students can succeed…
The breadth of JIS’ scholarship portfolio means ambitious students can thrive regardless of their passion, reducing the shackles of monetary concern so that each individual, in their own way, can truly Achieve Excellence.
As a testament to the School’s success at producing high-striving graduates, exam results for 2016 defied all expectations, displaying considerable improvements on results from the previous year. Last year, 27 percent of all grades for IGCSE were awarded at the A* level, while 53 percent of the total grades awarded were either A or A*. In line with this progression, JIS’s 2016 IB cohort obtained an average score of 35.3 points, well above the world average of 29.9, with 93 percent of students actually exceeding the world average.
And world-class results means entry to the world’s top universities, with JIS alumni being granted entry to leading higher education providers in the UK – and the world – including the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, the University of St Andrews, Imperial College London and Durham University.
As Principal, Barnaby Sandow concludes: “At JIS we are working hard to pursue an excellent course of holistic education that creates the next generation of self confident, well-rounded, high achieving individuals who can flourish as global citizens.”
