Iowa State University: Top engineering programmes and strong industry connections

Passionate about the combined power of technology and business, Ziwei Zheng found the ideal fit for her aspirations at Iowa State University. The Master of Engineering in Engineering Management was more specialised than an MBA. To Zheng, it provided just the preparation to help her solve technical and managerial challenges in developing modern complex engineered systems. “My decision to study at ISU was influenced by its renowned engineering programmes and its welcoming atmosphere for international students,” she says.

“The university’s reputation for academic excellence and strong industry connections, especially in engineering management, made it an ideal choice for furthering my education and advancing my career goals.

A legacy of excellence in industrial engineering

The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at ISU has been a key part of the campus for over a century. It offers a diverse range of graduate programmes that prepare students for success in various industries. Students can choose from three coursework-only Master of Engineering degrees: Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Engineering Management. The Industrial Engineering programme is ranked #24 by US News and World Report.

Zheng’s programme focuses on creating well-rounded professionals with expertise in engineering, science, and management. It equips students to become leaders who can bridge the gap between technical aspects and business realities in the development of modern engineered systems. Among her favourite courses are “System Engineering and Project Management” and “Engineering Risk Analysis”. The first stood out for its practical applications and real-world problem-solving scenarios, while the second sharpened Zheng’s ability to decide well under tough circumstances.

One of the programme’s standout features is its emphasis on learning by doing. Through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) internships, international students gain valuable work experience with US companies. These internships can be semester-long or extend over multiple semesters, giving students a solid foundation for future employment.

“Our department has been supportive of the CPT programme for over 10 years and in that time, we have also developed good relationships with industrial partners that have provided CPT experiences and will provide these experiences in the future,” says Dr. Gary Mirka, Director of Graduate Education. “We also partner with our college-level engineering career services to identify companies interested in using the skills of this engineering talent in their companies.”

These paid internships not only support classroom learning but also open doors to future job opportunities. Students who excel in their CPT internships may be eligible for the STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme, extending their US work authorisation for up to three years after graduation. The International Students and Scholars Office helps students to apply for OPT, ensuring a smooth transition into the workforce.

“The process is quite simple, and those students receiving degrees from our department can secure a three-year OPT since we are included in the STEM designation,” Dr. Mirka says.

A supportive community for academic and personal growth

The department is known for how close-knit it is. This is where students get keen attention from faculty while enjoying a wide range of opportunities. Cutting-edge labs and facilities provide engagement and exposure and allow students to work with peers and staff. Thanks to these features, Zheng was able to land a summer lab assistant position to further boost her skillset. “The care and support I’ve received from everyone in the department have helped me become more outgoing, enthusiastic, and positive,” Zheng says.

Gaurav Arwade, a PhD candidate from Sangli, India, focusing on Operations Research, agrees. When he was not taking part in research groups and seminars in his areas of interest — such as operations research, machine learning, and artificial intelligence — he was mentoring undergraduate researchers and getting “exceptional” and highly applicable insights from faculty on applied ML, data science and advanced manufacturing.

“Recognising the importance of relevant industry experience, my professor and department have helped me gain 1.5 years’ worth of full-time and part-time industry experience, which is great for my career aspirations,” he says.

The department thrives within the welcoming community of Ames, Iowa. Ranked as the #2 college town in the US, Ames offers a safe and culturally diverse environment for students.

For Zheng, the small and charming Midwestern city is the perfect backdrop for her American education. “The community was incredibly supportive, and I felt a strong sense of belonging,” she says. “The town offers many cultural and social events, from seasonal festivals to local farmers markets, which provide a pleasant break from studying and a chance to connect with the local culture.”

Arwade shares a similar experience. “Living in Ames, Iowa, as an international student has been a positive experience overall,” he says. “Ames is a cosy college town, and has excellent transportation connectivity, making it easy to get around,” he says.

To Arwade, Ames is open, liberal, and student-friendly. Comfortable and conducive, this high quality of life has helped him grow as a student and person. “The welcoming atmosphere and the focus on student well-being have greatly enhanced my overall experience in Ames,” he adds.

What’s more, Ames has a much lower cost of living —12% less expensive than the national average — making it an top option for cost-conscious students.
