If you’re thinking about a UK boarding school for your child, consider Kingswood. It could be the perfect choice for your family — here’s why:

Academic programmes with breadth and depth

Founded in 1748, Kingswood is a very special place that combines a long and proud history with a modern and dynamic educational outlook. Today, its pupils not only achieve outstanding academic results but demonstrate a love of learning and a spirit of enquiry.

Kingswood believes in the power of a liberal arts curriculum — or what it calls the best way to prepare young people for the modern world. Pupils get to develop a wide range of interests, thanks to 20 subject choices offered at GCSE level, and 23 at A Level.

A flexible academic curriculum lets students tailor a programme according to their strengths and passions. Whilst the breadth of their school’s co-curricular offering lets them discover and hone interests, from sports, music and drama to outdoor pursuits and academic societies. Leadership opportunities in the school community ensure each student gets to experience what it’s like to marshal collaborators towards a common goal at least once over their two years of Sixth Form. Thanks to Kingswood’s strong commitment to pastoral care, every Sixth Former is assigned a personal tutor who works alongside them too, offering encouragement and guidance at every step.

Pair this education of breadth and depth with the school’s quality of teaching and learning and a prevailing culture which celebrates aspiration and success and many young people have achieved astonishing success. The school boasts an 88% rate at A*- B for A Level and 76% rate at GCSE grades from 9-7. As many as 95% of graduates enter their preferred choice universities, with 67% enrolling in Russel Group universities. The school itself is in the top 20 of best-school.co.uk’s “Top 100 Co-ed Boarding Schools by A Levels and Pre U” rankings.

Outstanding and vast co-curricular offerings

Kingswood’s nurturing curriculum is enhanced by an outstanding programme of over 100 co-curricular activities each term. These provide important foundations for the development of character and personality in young people. The value and benefit of these experiences cannot be achieved by classroom teaching alone.

Many pupils take part in sports, music, drama, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and outdoor pursuits.  Kingswood also hosts the annual Bath Schools Model United Nations conference which is organised by the Sixth Form. Boarding in an inspiring home away from home

At this kind and inclusive school, children are known and nurtured as individuals, while benefiting from the array of activities, subjects and experiences that a British boarding school can offer. Pupils are encouraged to work hard, but also to enjoy a balanced lifestyle, with the opportunity to discover and develop new passions. As pupils grow older, they are encouraged to develop their independence, take responsibility for their studies and make informed decisions and choices for themselves, all within the foundation of the boarding house.

The Kingswood boarding houses are spread across their magnificent parkland estate, providing warm and homely environments for the boarders. All are staffed by dedicated and caring staff with specific skills and experience relevant to each year group. Their younger boarders join Westwood House, which is co-educational and accommodates 11 – 12 year olds.

From age 13 upwards, pupils live in one of the senior houses: Fonthill House or Summerhill House for girls and Hall House or Middle House for boys. Day pupils join one of these houses or Upper House (for boys) or School House (for girls). The focus throughout is on providing the very highest level of care for all boarders, including international boarders who enrich the Kingswood community in so many ways and who make a major contribution to the school’s very special atmosphere.

During the week, boarders have the opportunity to take part in one of over 100 activities from rock climbing to repair club or film club to football. As well as fielding nearly 30 teams each week for school fixtures Kingswood encourages pupils’ participation too; early morning swimming and evening hockey are attended by those on the first team, as well as those just wanting to train and enjoy the exercise and camaraderie.

As a full boarding school, the campus is busy over the weekend, whether pupils are playing in fixtures, catching up on some prep, practicing in the Music School or joining a weekend activity.

Trips can vary from shopping trips into Bath, Football Zorbing on the Lower playing field, to theatre trips in Bristol or to local sites such as Glastonbury Tor. “I think boarding at Kingswood provides a great community and unforgettable lifetime experiences,” says pupil, Lexi.
