In 2018, Nikhil Chalakkal already had an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and a decade of success in supply chain and operations. But he knew it was time for a career upgrade — one via Emory University’s Master of Science in Business Analytics.
To Chalakkal, there’s a crucial ingredient for businesses to grow and get better: analytics. It’s a field that “sits on top of anything else that you do. On top of supply chain. On top of marketing or finance.”
The MS in Business Analytics at Emory’s Goizueta Business School, ranked in the US’s top 20, did provide Chalakkal with the techniques and skills to become an effective business data scientist for a data-driven world. But there was something else he gained too. “The experience taught me the skills — definitely,” says the Senior Program Manager at Amazon. “More than that, it gave me the confidence that even if I don’t know how to get there, I can figure it out.”
Specialisations at the intersection of business, data, and technology
The MS in Business Analytics provides strong technical and quantitative training with comprehensive business acumen. You’ll learn data visualisation, machine learning, managing big data, social network analytics, business analytics, and more.
Emory’s MSBA has four specialised academic tracks: AI in Business, Business Analytics, Marketing Analytics, and Supply Chain Analytics. In the AI in Business track, you’ll harness machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision to extract insights and patterns from extensive datasets. This cutting-edge discipline is revolutionising business operations in fields ranging from customer service and marketing to supply chain management and product development. Meanwhile, in the Business Analytics track, you’ll gain the tools and techniques to translate data into valuable information that informs business strategies and operations across industries.
For those seeking a data-driven approach to modern marketing, the Marketing Analytics track equips you with the expertise to guide strategy, optimise campaigns, and drive business growth. Professionals in this field use data and statistical methods to assess marketing initiatives, understand consumer behaviour, and make data-driven decisions. The Supply Chain Analytics track is best for those who want to forecast demand, manage inventory, and streamline operations.
The programme culminates in a capstone course overseen by a curriculum advisory board and faculty mentors. This course provides real-world experience within a supportive environment. Students work in small teams to tackle complex business problems for clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to innovative startups. By combining the client’s proprietary data with other public data sources like social media streams, you will learn to apply the skills and techniques refined throughout the programme to develop viable business solutions.
Emory’s MSBA advantages
The intensive 10-month, STEM-designated MSBA programme emphasises practical application through real-world partnerships with leading organisations like FedEx, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), and The Home Depot. This ensures graduates are prepared to hit the ground running upon entering the workforce, regardless of the industry.
Throughout the programme, a career services team supports students in launching their data science careers in some of the fastest-growing fields in business. They organise one-to-one career coaching, on-site corporate visits, data challenges, hackathons, on-campus and virtual speakers, and more.
Pair this with the Emory network and students have a greater opportunity to land the jobs they want Just ask Adil Kumar, a 2020 graduate who now works as an AVP, Analytics Data and Innovation at Morgan Stanley. “I ended up getting my job through the MSBA programme office sharing my resume with an alum, which is the best example of how the Goizueta network really helped me achieve my professional goals,” he says.
Kumar and Chalakkal are by no means the only international graduates to do well after completing their MSBC. As many as 89% of graduates from the class of 2023 received job offers within six months of graduation, with a median base salary of US$95,000. They’re holding titles such as Analytics Solutions Analyst, Associate Consultant, Data Engineer, Machine Learning Scientist, Product Manager, Revenue Cycle Business Analyst, and more. More than 56% of graduates landed their full-time roles thanks to Goizueta’s internships, job postings, and network. What’s more, thanks to the programme’s STEM designation, graduates can apply for a possible 24-month extension of Optional Practical Training in the US beyond the usual 12 months.
