Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management: Unlocking extraordinary talent in hospitality management

When you join Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management at the University of Denver, you join a hospitality programme that prepares you to be bold, do good, and change lives.

Everything starts in Denver, a city known for its blend of business, innovation and recreation. With 300 days of sun and home to one of the top five convention markets in the country and the world’s fifth-busiest airport, Denver often ranks as one of Forbes and Kiplinger’s best cities for young professionals and recent college graduates.

The food scene is shaped by a restaurant community of James Beard award-winning chefs and Michelin-starred establishments. The hotel industry here is vibrant, with many offerings ranging from world-class resorts to unique and boutique hotels.

Within it all is the University of Denver (DU), dedicated to the public good and building individuals who bring added value to the wider world. Take Hard Rock Cafe co-founder Peter Morton, for example. The DU graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) in Hospitality Management has made his mark worldwide, embodying what it means to unlock one’s potential and reach great heights.

It’s unsurprising that students here are bound for such success. Fritz Knoebel is part of DU’s Daniels College of Business, the best-kept secret in the Rocky Mountain West, ranking  37th out of all US undergraduate business schools and top 1.25% of undergraduate business programmes in the country. More specifically, this is where you’ll find boutique programmes with a warm, supportive community of faculty and staff and innovative curricula that prepare you for a bright future ahead.

Those in the BSBA Hospitality Management programme can expect an in-depth exploration of the hospitality industry and its various segments, such as revenue management, managing human capital, and hotel and resort management, to name a few. Four concentrations are available, including lodging real estate, strategic lodging management restaurant/food and beverage management and event sales and management. Each concentration comes with its own specialised course, such as hospitality sales and marketing for event sales and management, and environmental sustainability in hospitality for strategic lodging management.

Adding to the curriculum are local and international industry work experiences, as well as a management intern programme. These courses are designed to increase exposure to the hospitality industry and continuously reconcile what students learn in classrooms with industry practice. Embedded in Fritz Knoebel’s courses are key industry certifications like STR Hotel Analytics, STR Hotel Feasibility, Forbes Five Star, Wine & Spirit Education Trust Level II Wine, and more. The school pays the full fees for students to take on these certifications.

This dedication to their students goes beyond equipping them with the finest skills and up-to-date market knowledge. Education at Fritz Knoebel ensures that students have the opportunity to pursue quality programmes at an affordable rate and provide necessary financial aid to those in need. This aid ranges from need- and merit-based scholarships, to federal direct subsidised and unsubsidised loans.

To prove that the school supports students to the end of their degree and even well beyond it, Fritz Knoebel is fast approaching six years of juniors and seniors not holding any student loans. First- or second-year students in the programme have at most US$2,500 in student loans. This is in part due to the need-based scholarships, as well as the fact that every student directly admitted to the Daniels College of Business and Fritz Knoebel receives a merit scholarship layered on top of DU merit awards. The school expects to provide around US$650,000 in scholarship awards to the approximately 150 students in the major in the 2024-25 academic year.

By the end of the programme, you’ll join the fine ranks of more than 3,400 students who have gone on to companies and management positions worldwide. Your studies will prepare you for senior management positions in the fast-paced and competitive hospitality industry, allowing you to put yourself forward to seize new opportunities or act on existing ones and shape yourself to be a pioneer within the next generation of hoteliers.
