Emory University’s Goizueta MBA: Gateway to leadership and career excellence

One investment that continues to give a high return on investment is the Master of Business Administration degree. The best MBAs are well-known for training executives to challenge conventional wisdom and foster a global perspective. But if you’re Indian and based in a country with the second-largest pool of MBAs in the world, how do you stand out?

This is where Emory University’s Goizueta Business School steps in. Their Full-Time MBA programme is recognised among the nation’s best. It is ranked #16 by Businessweek (2023-2024) and #18 by US News & World Report (2024). It is among the country’s top five schools for career placement success within three months of graduation as well.

These are convincing figures for anyone seeking an English-taught master’s degree with a high return on investment. Offered full-time at a top 20 business school in the US, the two-year STEM MBA is all about impact. Goizueta’s lecturers, including world renowned Professor Jagdish N. Sheth, push students to challenge the status quo, master theory, get comfortable in new roles, and lead teams. The result? Graduates become strategic innovators and problem solvers — ready for that career change or the next step on their current path.

While his sole focus for pursuing an MBA was on consulting, Sukhreet Singh 23MBA found a plethora of opportunities at Goizueta that broadened his horizons, allowing him to learn more about venture capital, private equity, marketing, and corporate finance. “That kind of encouraged me to stray away from the path that I had initially come into and look at more opportunities,” he says. “The business school has done a terrific job in providing me those opportunities and exploring the different career paths that I can choose from moving forward.” After graduating, Sukhreet chose a role in finance.

Beyond its supportive environment, Goizueta offers flexibility. With 90 electives and 20 concentrations, ranging from consulting and marketing to business analytics and investment banking, students can tailor their MBA journey to match their interest and professional goals.

Neha Rai, a 2020 graduate who was focused on pursuing a career in consulting and social impact, chose concentrations in Strategy and Social Enterprise. During her time at Goizueta, she held a Social Enterprise Fellowship, enabling her to collaborate closely with faculty and the Business & Society Institute leadership on projects that generated positive social change. Her experience at Goizueta helped her pivot from marketing analytics roles into corporate strategy roles—first with Electronic Arts (EA) and most now with SplashLearn, an award-winning programme that teaching math to children.

Leadership development is a big part of the MBA. There’s the Goizueta Leadership Development Programme which takes a three-pronged approach: academic, experiential, and reflective learning. Each pillar equips students with the necessary experience to become effective team leaders and deliver impactful results.

Alongside this, students receive ongoing coaching from top executives and ongoing professorial training. They take part in challenges that expand their horizons and can earn the Certificate of Advanced Leadership by fulfilling specific academic requirements and joining co-curricular leadership activities.

Pulkit Khatri, a 2021 graduate, exemplifies the impact of this approach. He pursued his MBA at Goizueta to advance his expertise in product management, digital transformation, and strategy. Today, the product manager at Google uses a data-driven, customer-centric approach that benefits both his clients and his workplace. He can now handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and has refined his cross-functional leadership and prioritisation abilities.

Considering all these factors, it’s little wonder that 96% of graduates from the class of 2023 received job offers in various industries — such as consulting, technology, financial services, retail, and more — all within three months of graduation. Today, they are adding value at organisations like Amazon, Bain & Company, EY, Capital One Financial Corporation, and more.

While the median starting salary in the U.S. for new MBA hires is US$115,000 according to mba.com, Goizueta students have a median starting salary of US$165,000 or US$193,000 with bonus (class of 2023). Thanks to the programme’s STEM designation, international graduates can apply for a possible 24-month extension of Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the US beyond the usual 12 months.
