Emory University: How the “language of the future” can advance your business career

In today’s world, data has become the “language of the future,” driving innovation and shaping industries across the globe. From healthcare to finance and retail to technology, data analytics is changing how organizations make decisions, solve problems, and create strategies. Companies like Amazon and Netflix, for example, use data to predict customer behavior, improve supply chains, and decide what to promote, showing us how powerful this new language has become. For those who wish to speak it fluently, the right education can unlock seemingly endless possibilities.

Enter Emory University’s Goizueta Business School . Join the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program and you won’t just know how to analyze numbers — you’ll learn how to translate data into strategic insights that drive real-world business decisions.

The MSBA program merges technical and quantitative training with essential business knowledge. You’ll learn data visualization, machine learning, big data management, social network analytics, business analytics, and more. With four specialized tracks — AI in Business, Business Analytics, Marketing Analytics, and Supply Chain Analytics — the program caters to diverse interests and career goals.

It’s a steady journey to the capstone course where you’ll apply all you’ve learned as you work on real-world projects alongside faculty mentors and industry partners. This is your chance to work in a small team to tackle complex business problems for a range of clients, from Fortune 500 companies to rising startups. You’ll learn to merge proprietary data with public data sources, such as social media streams, to create practical business solutions.

Bridging theory and practice

What sets Goizueta’s MSBA apart is the blend of theory with experience. You won’t just sit in a classroom; you’ll actively transform complex data into actionable strategies. Take Dipanjan Goon , for instance. The student from India chose the MSBA program to enhance his data science skills within a business context. With a background in business consulting, Deep understands the significance of honing his technical skills while ensuring they have real-world applications.

“I want to learn these tools and become more technical, but I also want to make sure I can apply them to solve real-world business challenges,” he says.

And through this program, he does just that. At the heart of the MSBA experience is project-based learning . Emory ensures that students engage in substantial real-world work, primarily through their business analytics capstone project. Here, small teams of five students collaborate, using data sourced from Goizueta’s industry partners. Each project concludes with a presentation of their findings, including technical deliverables like code and cleansed data, along with dashboard visualizations and an executive summary highlighting their analytics process and its business impact.

The school has partnerships with companies like FedEx, InterContinental Hotels Group, and The Home Depot – giving students access to the inner workings of today’s top brands. At Home Depot, Goon saw how large language models were used to improve customer retention. “It’s one thing to discuss generative AI, ChatGPT, and large language models in theory, but seeing how companies implement them in practice has been eye-opening,” he says.

Career support and networking opportunities

Throughout the program, Goizueta provides career services to help you launch your career in data science, one of the fastest-growing fields in business. They offer one-on-one career coaching, corporate visits, data challenges, hackathons, and access to both on-campus and virtual speakers.

Pair this with the Goizueta network, and students have even more opportunities to land the jobs they want. In fact, 89% of graduates from the class of 2023 received job offers within six months of graduation, with a median base salary of US$95,000. Graduates have taken on titles such as Analytics Solutions Analyst, Associate Consultant, Data Engineer, Machine Learning Scientist, Product Manager, and more. Most graduates secured full-time roles thanks to Goizueta’s internships, job postings, and extensive network.

Thanks to the program’s STEM designation, international students can apply for a 24-month extension of Optional Practical Training in the US, extending the usual 12-month period. This is an exciting advantage if you’re seeking more professional experience in the US.
