You can save yourself a lot of the turmoil of waiting for acceptance by applying to one of these US colleges with high acceptance rates for international students.
But before we get into that, there are a few things you need to know about acceptance rates.
Everything you need to know about acceptance rates
When applying for university, international students often need to submit the following documents:
- Application form
- Essays
- Standardised testing scores, like the SAT or ACT
- Proof of proficiency in English, like the IELTS or TOEFL
- Exam transcripts
- Proof of funds
Most of us think that these are the only documents that decide whether an international student is accepted or not. That’s not entirely true.
There are other factors that influence a US university’s acceptance rates for international students.
Some US universities have to follow government or internal regulations that limit how many international students that can enrol in a year.
This ranges between 10% to 20% of the total student population. These figures change according to the funding, academic programmes, and other institutional priorities every year as well.
Another quota that may influence whether you get in or not is the diversity quota.
This refers to the number of students from a certain country or region that a university would like to see more or less.
For example, if a uni currently has too many students from India, it may want to balance it out with more students from China or Russia, for example.
The level of study you’re applying to matters as well. US universities reportedly prioritise local students at the undergraduate level, but less so at the postgraduate level.
Thus, it may be easier for international students to enter master’s or PhD programmes, than for bachelor’s programmes.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused many colleges and unis to lose international students — to make up for this, many are offering flexibility in admissions and the way they teach to cater to their needs.
What makes these the colleges with high acceptance rates?
The easy universities to get into for international students share these traits:
- More flexible requirements for international students to apply. These may include lower TOEFL scores, making SAT or ACT scores optional, and more.
- Option to join pathway programmes. These refer to short-term courses to improve one’s English and/or get used to American campus life.
- Are located in states in need of more diverse residents.
- Have partnerships with colleges and universities abroad — such as the American Degree Transfer Programme, which allows students to complete their first year in their home country before transferring to a US institution.
