Brock University: Graduating research leaders in quantum technologies

In 2025, the United Nations celebrated the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology to honour the next 100 years of progress — because while some may view the field as some science fiction concept, quantum technologies are in fact, opening the door to new industrial applications where conventional systems may fall short.

Think reducing waste and energy consumption, or smoothing out supply chains and production processes. As technologies such as computing, energy, sensing, and secure communication evolve, industrial research and development are advancing. The Government of Canada continues to invest heavily in the National Quantum Strategy to stay ahead of quantum innovation and leadership.

The quantum computing market alone is worth approximately US$1.42 billion, and yet, talent remains sparse. In 2024, a survey found that 67% of employers reported it had become increasingly difficult to recruit qualified quantum workers compared to previous years. By 2030, the industry will need an additional 100,000 workers in quantum science.

Bridging the gap between demand and talent is the Master of Science in Materials Physics (MSMP) at Brock University, which has had a 100% graduation rate since it began in 2016. The programme aims to equip students with job-ready skills through practical training in materials synthesis, characterisation, and advanced analytical techniques.

You will begin your journey in the 16-month course-based pathway, with entry available in both September and January. As you are near the end of the program, you’ll have the flexibility to graduate or extend your studies through an eight-month Major Research Project. Working under the supervision of a Brock University faculty scientist, you’ll deepen your research expertise in materials physics while gaining valuable hands-on experience that will strengthen your preparation for PhD studies or research-focused careers.

Through conducting independent research, you’ll gain hands-on experience using emerging technologies, aligning them strongly with the needs of industrial R&D. “The programme exposed me to various scientific instrumentals utilised for materials characterisation,” says Anish Rajan, who graduated from the programme in 2025. “This strengthened my ability to collect, interpret, and report experimental data.”

Brock University’s Physics Department: A full range of support services

The journey through a master’s is never truly linear. The MSMP, in particular, seeks to graduate material physicists who can work independently or in collaboration with others across positions in industry, government agencies, research institutes, and universities worldwide.

As a student here, this is a process you’ll never have to brave alone.

“Brock University provided a supportive academic environment with dedicated faculty mentorship that encouraged curiosity, independence, and professional growth,” Genevieve O. Uzoma, a Class of 2026 graduate. “The Graduate Professional Development Award, which I received, further reflects the university’s commitment to supporting student excellence.”

There are many systems in place to support the department’s diverse student community. Based in the Niagara Region of Canada, just an hour away from the bustling Toronto, Brock University also provides easy access to the US cities like Buffalo, New York. Before and as students arrive on campus, surrounded by serene waterfalls and world-class wineries, they can reach out to Brock International to help them settle in. Think services in health and wellness, as well as immigration and travel support.

International students are required to complete the Graduate Science Preparation Seminar (GSPS) as a key course within the program. It’s an intensive English seminar designed to prep those whose first language is not English for graduate academic settings. As students will have many opportunities to present their research results throughout the MSMP, this training ensures you’re ready — both in class and for your future career.

“The MSMP trained me to think and work like a researcher: reading and assessing literature effectively, planning experiments with clear goals, troubleshooting systematically, interpreting data critically, and communicating results clearly in reports and presentations,” says Teresa Dong, an MSMP graduate who’s now pursuing a PhD.

A fresh high school grad looking to pursue quantum science? This is where you start

If you’ve just graduated from high school and want to study quantum technologies, the Physics Department offers the perfect start. The Bachelor of Science in Physics or Mathematics includes summer and capstone research opportunities for all students, giving you crucial experience early on.

You can further enhance your bachelor’s degree with a concentration. This develops focused expertise in a specific area, deepening your depth of knowledge and preparing you for specialised careers or advanced study. In physics, you can pursue specialisations in Quantum Materials, Theoretical Physics, or Applied Physics. In mathematics, you can choose concentrations in Applied Mathematics, as well as Mathematics Integrated with Computers and Applications.
