Box Hill School: Empowering students beyond classrooms

The best schools transform learners today into leaders tomorrow. Visit their campuses and you’ll find not a factory of children looking into exam sheets to produce grades — but children exploring their interests, passions, and dreams. In a daily roster of a seemingly endless list of actitivites, they’re making friends and memories. They’re seeking mentorship and guidance from expert teachers and coaches. All of this complement world-class curriculum with the goal of supporting children on their journey to university and beyond.

Box Hill School strikes this delicate study-play-grow balance — thanks to its co-curricular programmes. This independent boarding school of international character for students between 11 and 18 offers both International Baccalaureate and A Levels, as well as day, flexi, weekly and full boarding.

Box Hill School is part of Round Square, an international network of 230 like-minded schools in 50 countries, that share a commitment to character education and experiential learning built around six themes – our IDEALS – International Understanding, Democracy, Environmental Stewardship, Adventure, Leadership and Service.

World-class programmes and experiences at Box Hill School realise this vision. On any given day, they ensure students thrive both in the classroom and outdoors while going on to find purpose and meaning in life.

Physical education and sport is central to this. As they play and compete in rugby, archery, football, netball, basketball, tennis and more, students learn leadership, discipline, and teamwork, all while reaping the benefits of physical activity. Support is available every step of the way, no matter one’s sporting ability. Those more inclined towards recreational sports can try martial arts, horse riding, swimming and golf.

At the Sports Centre, opened by HRH The Earl of Wessex in 2018, they have cutting-edge resource on two levels, featuring all the latest equipment and facilities. This includes indoor facilities like netball, basketball, hockey, volleyball, tennis and badminton courts; four cricket indoor nets and five-a-side football, fitness suite/gym and a mezzanine level. Outdoor spaces include an AstroTurf pitch for tennis, hockey, football and netball, rooftop netball and tennis court.

Just as many students cultivate a love for music, art, and drama. The purpose-built Music School has an extensive offering of instruments for tuition, including the violin, trumpet, piano, guitar, and drums. Students thoroughly enjoy this and have formed bands and the school choir, which have toured locations like Venice and Verona.

That is not all for creatives. They can harness their talent in stage productions, speech and drama lessons, fashion and textiles, and jazz as well. Students then can showcase their work through art exhibitions and festivals.

Box Hill School’s activities and adventure take students beyond campus to further develop their interests, increase their confidence and provide them with a wide variety of life skills. They go on special trips, university fairs, and events. Whether it’s paintball, skydiving or a yearly service trip to South Africa, where students assist with the Philippolis Project, they have a grand and meaningful time. All of this accelerate their passions and help them develop their characters and identities.

With many exciting things going, Box Hill School’s pastoral care team ensures every student here still feels seen, valued and looked after. Thi starts from the very first day. Once enrolled, a student is assigned a tutor, and a boarder is given both a tutor and a houseparent. Tutor groups consist of different ages so students can guide and support each other.

To prepare students for their next steps, the careers programme organises one-to-one advising sessions and experiences that demand courage, generosity, imagination, principle and resolution. The goal is to support the aspirations of all our students and ensure they gain the understanding, skills and experience needed to make informed choices to achieve personal and economic wellbeing throughout their lives.

“The mentoring was fantastic, they gave me a good amount of freedom and taught me to have passions and to work hard and focus on what I was good at,” says graduate Alex, who is now living and working in the construction and engineering industry in Chicago. “Box Hill School gave me the drive I have today to be successful. They gave me a good amount of freedom and taught me to have passions and to work hard and focus on what I was good at.”

The school’s career development culture is underpinned by Round Square principles of internationalism, democracy, environment, adventure, leadership and service. Opportunities let students see these in action, be it through taking part in global and regional conferences, undertaking projects and going on student exchanges that benefit them and broaden their horizons.

Just ask Lucy, who visited India to represent Round Square during an international trip. It wouldn’t have been possible without the school’s efforts, she says. “I learnt mostly people skills. I came from a very different background to a lot of my peers, and there were a lot of international students. I met all sorts of people,” she says.

She is a radio DJ today and credits Box Hill School for giving her the passion for pursuing her interest. “Box Hill School taught me that if you love something enough, you will find a way to pursue it no matter the obstacles,” she says. “Just make sure you are doing it for all the right reasons.”
