    Boston College: Shaping thought leaders

At Boston College, Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences (MCGS) graduate students view the Humanities with a wide scope —  With research ranging from examinations of the human experience to discussions of life’s great questions. A quick look at MCGS graduate and current student work illustrates this reach:

-In 2020, graduate Asha Lemmie published her debut novel — a story set in post-World War II Japan about the illegitimate child of a Japanese aristocrat and an African American GI. She is now a New York Times best-selling author.

-Shannon Vallor, a philosopher and 2001 graduate, spent decades studying the impact of artificial intelligence on humanity. She is now the first Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the Edinburgh Futures Institute.

-Shaun Slusarski, a current doctoral candidate in theological ethics, is making an impact by exploring the inequalities of the US prison healthcare system – Certainly no small feat.

The impact of MCGS’ prominent scholars and innovative researchers in creating new knowledge, influencing policy and improving communities extends well beyond its breathtaking campus in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Boston College is a private, R1 research university founded in 1863. Today, it is home to thousands of students from across the world, each immersed in a well-rounded education and preparing to tackle today’s moral, political and technological dilemmas.

From real-world learning to real-world impact

A comprehensive selection of Humanities programmes is offered across six different departments at Boston College: Classical Studies, English, History, Philosophy, Romance Languages and Literatures, and Theology. Pursuing a master’s or doctorate degree in any department will ensure a formative experience with world-class professors and collaborative learning. Students dive into curricula that enforce critical thinking, ethical reasoning, creative imagination, cultural competency, and effective communication.

MCGS students also have the advantage of living and learning close to 35 other colleges and universities within the Greater Boston area. From enhanced coursework options to seminars and workshops across neighbouring institutions, Boston College students learn beyond their Chestnut Hill campus. Such experiences expand knowledge while broadening networking opportunities and learning options.

“Boston College offers its students an impressive set of resources and a collegial community of scholars committed to the good of one another and the good of the church,” says Andrew Belfield, a Theology graduate. “Plus, the city of Boston itself has a rich religious cultural history, making it a wonderful location to study.”
