There’s no doubt that some of the world’s oldest universities continue to dominate world rankings and see the hottest competition for enrolment.
Ivy League Harvard University was established all the way back in 1636, while its UK rival the University of Oxford is even older. There is evidence that teaching was happening at Oxford as far back as 1096.
But you know what they say: you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. “Young” universities – those defined as less than 50 years old – are sometimes more willing and able to innovate and provide a truly 21st Century education for their students.
Here are the top eight young universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2017.
8. Ulm University, Germany
7. City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
6. Maastricht University, Netherlands
5. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea
4. Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea
3. Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
2. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong
1. École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland
