Who would have thought your Mum was right when she said: “People are not going to follow you around cleaning up after you your whole life!”

Because you know, that towel really isn’t going to pick itself up, and no matter how long you ignore those crusty squashed chips scattered across the kitchen floor, they still are not going to go away. But if these things can’t sort themselves out, it’s pretty impressive that your last Crispy Kreme can just decide it’s time to take annual leave, and is able to walk out of your cupboard all by himself without a single person thinking to question a walking, talking doughnut; and how come every other day, without fail, the toilet roll flutters off all by itself because apparantly, it isn’t necessary for any of your housemates to wipe after they’ve done their business…

Hmm…something here just doesn’t add up.

Moving away from family and living with strangers for the first time is a steep learning curve that can challenge even the most budding of socialites. Your housemates might seem lovely and fun, but behind the scenes they’re probably filthy, and possibly also repeatedly dishonest…

Things are going to go missing and people will refuse to tidy up, but one of the greatest things about University is that it teaches you how to approach negative situations and allows you to grow into a person that can face challenges head-on, but also knows how to handle a person you may not particularly even like. If you have suspicions that someone in messing with your things, TALK TO THEM! Don’t leave notes lying around the house as a means of avoiding direct confrontation, because if anything, it really will make the situation much worse.

That being said, we’d be foolish to believe you won’t be tempted to leave one throughout the whole of your student life – and sometimes, things can only truly be expessed through the eloquent art of the written word…
