“If you’re passionate about health and technology, Carleton University is where you need to be.”
Located in Ottawa, Carleton University’s Faculty of Science is a leading destination for those interested in the intersection of health and technology and its capabilities to advance healthcare. Learning here is discovery-based, with high quality laboratory experiences and field trips as key features. Involvement starts from as early as your first year of undergraduate studies.
Home to 12 departments, schools, and institutes, the faculty serves as a hub for research in natural sciences, computer science, mathematics, and statistics. No matter which field you specialise in or what level of study you’re in, research is part of the curriculum.
Take the Bachelor of Cybersecurity (BCyber), for example. Not only is it one of the more unique programmes in the country, but it also has the strongest research team within the cybersecurity field. The faculty’s location adds another advantage — it is surrounded by local high-tech companies and government organisations, which opens up opportunities for networking and employment.
Similar to the BCyber, the Bachelor of Data Science (BDS) is just as immersed in the capital city’s tech sector. Every year, you have the opportunity to showcase your projects to other researchers and data science experts while discussing current developments in data science. Two concentrations – artificial intelligence (AI) and statistics – are available, both with foundations in data wrangling, inferential statistics, analytics, big data, and data ethics.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), on the other hand, is a hybrid of experiential learning in on-campus laboratories and clinical placements at Queensway Carleton Hospital. Starting from your first semester, your clinical experiences will use innovative extended reality simulation models, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), and develop critical thinking skills. You will train alongside other professional healthcare partners to gain exposure to the current on-the-job challenges nurses face today.
“Our Nursing programme is the first of its kind in Ontario in over 20 years, and it’s designed for the future,” says Danielle Manley, Director of the School of Nursing. “We’re not just training nurses and career-ready scientists; we’re preparing leaders in health innovation that can keep up with technology.” Carleton is also the first university in the world to embed RN prescribing within the undergraduate curriculum. This means every graduate of the programme will enter practice with prescribing authority as part of their RN designation.
At the graduate level, the MSc in Clinical Trials and Regulatory Affairs is exemplary in developing clinical and research skills. As you explore the scientific, methodological, and regulatory dimensions of clinical trials, you get to engage with a community of experts made up of leading researchers, experienced clinicians, and regulatory professionals who are committed to providing you with the ins and outs of the industry. This master’s programme is the first of its kind in Ontario, Canada.
Another new programme is the Master of Biotechnology. Bridging the gap between having an entrepreneurial mindset and practical experience in scientific fields, it serves as the MBA for STEM startups. Unlike traditional MBAs, this programme is tailored more towards the unique needs of scientists, which is why you are taught to lead, innovate, and launch science-based ventures.
Another way this programme stands out is in how it lets you develop real-world HealthTech, GreenTech, CleanTech, FoodTech, and SaMD solutions through internships and incubators. The programme can connect you to research institutes as well, if you prefer R&D.

A close-knit learning environment
It is easy to see why the university consistently ranks among the top Canadian institutions for student satisfaction. As the community is close-knit, you will feel at home even if you are far from home.
The Student Services team is always available to provide practical tips and insights, along with one-on-one sessions, making it easier to navigate the professional world. The Global Opportunities & International Student Services Office (GO-ISSO) adds another layer of support. They give guidance on adjusting to life in a Canada as well as help you get the most out of your time here. You can also get information on volunteer opportunities, international internships and co-op, and study abroad programmes.
“Living and studying at Carleton is a unique and fulfilling experience,” student Ana says. “The campus and its people have a close-knit community, where there’s always something happening, from academic to cultural events. And people are always finding something new to do in the study spaces and green areas.”
