University of Wrocław in Poland: A multicultural hub of research excellence

When Hemn Hussein moved from Kurdistan to Wrocław, Poland, nothing could’ve prepared him for life in this city with 1,000 years of history and a fairytale charm. It still wears its Medieval origins on the streets and buildings, especially in the Market Square, where you’ll find colourful, old-timey townhouses. It’s known as the “Venice of Poland,” as the city is a series of 12 islands connected by 112 bridges – a result of being built on the banks of the Odra River.

What brought Hussein to Poland is the pursuit of the International Relations, Global Studies (Master’s) at the University of Wrocław, one of the most prestigious in the country, with over 300 years of academic history. Students from more than 100 countries across 150 fields have gathered on campus to immerse themselves in UWr’s research innovation in a city that beats as the cultural heart of the nation.

“I would describe the University of Wrocław as a time-travelling portal into a whole new world where opportunity meets hard work and talent,” says Hussein. “Once you have your acceptance letter in hand, consider your life changed, and I mean that in a very practical sense.”

    A warm welcome from Wrocław

Words aren’t enough to describe the historical depth of Wrocław. In Ostrów Tumski, the oldest part of the city, you’ll find a museum which has been collecting sacred art for over 100 years, including the Book of Henryków, which reads the first written sentence in Polish. Culture and entertainment breathe on every street, every turning point. The bustle of globally recognised festivals, like the Jazz nad Odra or the annual Brave Festival, is frequent.

“As an artist, studying in the city of Wrocław can be very inspiring due to its beautiful scenery and landscape, as well as the art scene. Even within the university campus, it’s absolutely beautiful,” says Hussein. “The city’s hospitality is amazing, and dormitory life is super fun.”

It may be daunting at first to study so far away from home. But when you’re welcomed into a city that’s as vibrant and multicultural as Wrocław, it’s easy to feel that warm, familiar comfort. The city is filled with students just like you, forming a close-knit community where you can build a lasting support system.

If one thing’s for sure, the International Office at UWr ensures you’ll never be alone within or beyond campus. The team helps students make the most of UWr’s affordable tuition and Wroclaw’s lower cost of living. So far, they’ve been a success with international students, so much so that it’s enable UWr to offer even more programmes in English.

For Samir Guluzade, a ‘24 graduate, being a foreign student never posed an impossible challenge. “It’s thanks to the incredible support from the International Office and the Dean’s Office,” he says. “Whether it was sorting out documents for the embassy or the TRC (Temporary Residence Card), they were always there with a smile and ready to help.”

With a vast global community on campus, you’ll find it easy to fit right in. The International Office runs the Welcome Point, which helps you navigate the early days of your transition to university. They are your starting point, whether you need to ask general questions about the city or handle the legal matters of your stay. The Student Council has created a Buddy System, where you’re paired with a local student to help you adapt. At the Foreign Language Centre, you can take courses in English, French, Spanish, German, and Russian.

“I’ve made lifelong friendships with people from all over the world and had the chance to collaborate on exciting projects with industry professionals,” says Guluzade.

A university that evolves with time

Three hundred years of heritage, nine Nobel Prize Laureates, one of the oldest universities in Poland – UWr has achieved a lot since since 1702. Today, it’s a hub for cutting-edge research, a home to scientists elected to join the prestigious Polish Academy of Sciences. It’s part of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB),” a flagship programme funded by the 2018 Polish Higher Education and Science Act.

“Through this university, you can be introduced to a global network of academics who may help create true leaders, entrepreneurs, and career-oriented individuals with a very promising future,” says Hussein. “Plus, the university’s social environment is truly intercultural and multilingual.”

Thirty of the 150 fields of study are taught in English. No matter the language, the programmes delivered are interdisciplinary, flexible, and reflective of evolving market needs. Through strong industry links, UWr partners with about 800 universities from nearly 40 countries to ensure you have access to global opportunities. You can pursue anything from social sciences, to law, liberal arts, and more – all tailored to address today’s societal and economic challenges.

For example, the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication offers two English-taught master’s programmes emphasising the practices of the digital age: Media Content Creation and Communication Management. In Media Content Creation, you’ll develop a strong grasp of social and visual communication, using various media forms to target diverse audiences. Through the Communication Management programme, you’ll get hands-on with advertising, public relations, and branding, using design as a core skill set in organisational and brand image.

“The university is highly respected by top corporations, making it a great choice for anyone looking to build a successful career,” says Guluzade. “Without a doubt, the best university in Wroclaw!”
