Business at Kelley School of Business, Indiana University: Beyond the classroom

There are many challenges when adjusting to a new city, university, and country. When Deborah Martinez Garcia first moved from Brazil to the US, she had to confront these difficulties. They were testing, but it wasn’t long before Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business became home. “I was able to quickly adapt to the new education system, registering for classes and having a four-year plan through college,” says Garcia.

Her quick adaption to US culture and academic system is all thanks to her professors, mentors, seniors, friends, and career coach – all of whom supported her during her time at the school ranked #9 for Overall Best Undergraduate Business Programme (US News & World Report 2025) and #14 in Poets and Quants’s Best Undergraduate Business Schools.

“I had many Kelley faculty that helped me a lot through my college journey,” Garcia says. “They were understanding of my international background and helped me overcome some knowledge barriers that I faced throughout the semesters, such as in my Business Writing class, when I needed extra guidance for doing a bibliography compared to the other students who have had exposure to it in their high school years.”

The school is deeply committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for international students before, during, and after their move to Kelley.

“What truly distinguishes Kelley is the deliberate integration of team-based learning and mentorship,” says Laurie Colglazier, Executive Director of Kelley Undergraduate Programme. “For international students, this means opportunities to share their unique perspectives while learning from peers with diverse experiences, creating a supportive network that extends well beyond graduation.”

For first-year students, the Brian D. Jellison Living Learning Center (JLLC) serves as a hub where motivated business students can participate in a residential programme that focuses on personal, academic, and professional development. Professional fraternities run activities that allow members to feel like they belong in the greater IU campus, including mental health training. And if a policy doesn’t work for Kelley students, the Student Government acts as the voice of all undergraduate students to advocate for a better student experience.

#2 for academic experience

Having this ecosystem of support can explain why Poets and Quants ranked the school second best in the country for academic experience. When you’re secure in your community, you can focus fully on what truly matters: your education.

Kelley has seven majors ranked in the top 10 of US News & World Report’s Best Undergraduate Business Programmes 2025. These include Marketing, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Management, Management Information Systems, Finance and Production/Operations Management.

Whichever major you choose, you’ll hone the knowledge, skills, and whatever it takes to be an in-demand graduate. As of October 2024, as many as 96% of past students have full-time job offers or graduate school acceptances within three months of graduation.

Ask these graduates, and they’ll point to various reasons for their success: – but just as many will say it’s because as a Kelley student, there is no shortage of ways to enhance what you learn within the classroom with what’s available beyond it.

The school has over 80 business-focused clubs and organisations for seemingly every interest. The university itself is home to over 700 student organisations. They have tackled urban poverty and homelessness in San Diego and environmental conservation and sustainability in Ecuador, visited microfinance institutions around the world, gained real consulting experience with nonprofits, and so much more. Whether you’re into making a difference or realising a passion, you’re bound to find an organisation that’ll enhance your learning and experience at Kelley.

“I am involved in Association of Latino Professionals For America, as their Chair of Finance, Christians in Business, as its co-founder, and Global Peer Mentors, as their VP of Events,” Garcia says. “I am proud to be a part of all of these, and I can say confidently that they made this country and campus feel more like home, with my international family at Global Peers, and my Latino family at ALPFA.”

Need more help finding a career path? The Undergraduate Career Services is always ready to enhance your career opportunities. Through coaches, events, networking sessions, job boards, and more, the centre has helped over 1,400 companies – the likes of UBS, Amazon, Morgan Stanley, KPMG, and Microsoft – hire Kelley students for internships and full-time positions.

“In summer 2024, I had an internship with EY Brazil, working in my hometown with their Strategy and Transactions Valuations team,” Garcia says. “Kelley contributed to this accomplishment by preparing me for the interviews and providing me with a good network that connected me to this summer programme.”
