Forget ordinary — St David’s College takes education to the next level. Since 1965, this independent co-educational day and boarding school for students aged 9 to 19 has been crafting a learning experience as unique as its students.
Here, traditional academics meet exciting opportunities in outdoor education, performing arts, computer-aided design, and more. It’s a space where students can explore their passions, uncover hidden talents, and prepare for what comes next.
Central to the St. David’s experience is a holistic approach to education, one that values every learner’s potential. Whether students excel academically or face unique challenges, they are supported to thrive in an environment that fosters growth and confidence. The result? Happy, engaged learners who grow into well-rounded young adults.
Learning for all
St David’s is recognised as one of Wales’ leading schools for dyslexia. Teachers here use multi-sensory techniques to create an inclusive, supportive environment with lessons that align with how pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia learn best. For example, pupils can use Microsoft Office 365’s Immersive Reader, which reads documents aloud, helping them follow along, grasp key concepts, and develop independent learning skills.
Outside the classroom is the Cadogan Centre, a dedicated space for one-to-one or group lessons with just two to four pupils at a time. With over 500 specialist lessons delivered each week, online or on campus, the centre’s postgraduate-qualified teachers help with various learning challenges, from literacy and maths difficulties to memory, focus, and processing speed issues.
These tailored approaches have a lasting impact. Will Greenhalgh came to St. David’s with the odds stacked against him. “I was told I wouldn’t succeed due to my dyslexia,” he says. “But thanks to the custom learning here, I not only excelled academically but built the confidence I lacked. I took three GCSEs early and scored all 8s, proving to myself that I can achieve anything.”
Isobel Hardy’s experience was equally transformative. “St David’s has taught me that dyslexia doesn’t mean I can’t succeed,” she says. “I’ve learned that I can achieve, even when I find things difficult. I also love the constant opportunities for activities throughout the day and weekends. The community here is like a family, and that’s something I didn’t have at my old school.”
A winning formula for sports education
Sports play a central role in the St David’s experience. By joining sports teams or participating in international competitions, all pupils are encouraged to pursue their athletic dreams.
To ensure success on and off the field, teachers and coaches offer personalised study plans, encouraging pupils to excel academically while nurturing their skills. Leading the way is a former Wales rugby PE teacher who knows the pressure that such high achievement brings. Their team’s expertise, combined with the Sport and PE Department’s philosophy to train the mind as well as the body, evolves students into confident athletes.
St David’s College is happy to support those who see sports as more than a hobby. Pupils in Years 10 and 11 can pursue a Level 2 BTEC in Sport and advance to a Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Sixth Form. These qualifications are designed with input from employers, professional groups, and universities to help pupils prepare for further study or the world of work.
All routes are effective. This past summer, 89% of pupils achieved double distinction (DD) or higher. Many were accepted to their first-choice universities to study Sports Science. Two pupils were shortlisted for Junior Sportswoman of the Year: one will represent Wales in the Under 17 UEFA Qualifiers, while the other is the U16 Welsh Ski Champion and U16 British Indoor and Outdoor Ski Champion.
Other accomplishments include a British U16 Weightlifting Champion, a shooter who has made the Wales National Skeet Shooting Team, a kart driver training for the British Kart Championships, and a netball player recently selected to represent Wales.
