Experience a warm welcome at the University of Leicester

When the opportunity to study abroad came knocking on Fira Trisanti’s doorstep, it felt like an unachievable dream was finally coming true. She became one of 17 recipients of the Indonesian Student Mobility Award Scheme (IISMA) — a prestigious government scholarship to fund an overseas study stint  – selected to study at the University of Leicester. It was a full circle moment — she was achieving an opportunity that her parents once longed for but never fulfilled due to the lack of such funding opportunities when they were students.

Suddenly, she had a long list of IISMA’s partner universities across the globe to sift through, though her sights were quickly set on the University of Leicester. Fira says, “I chose the University of Leicester as my top pick mainly because of the modules it presented, though I also love how livable the city is, looking at the inclusivity of people with disabilities and how relatively cheap [it is] to grocery shop here.”

Leicester’s stellar reputation would give any candidate a strong first impression. In the annual National Student Survey — answered by almost 346,000 final-year students in the UK — Leicester garnered collective praise for areas like organisation and management, student voice, and academic support. University Compare named them the 9th best university in the country after weighing the results. Recently, it was crowned Daily Mail University of the Year 2025.

So, the fact that the university goes to great lengths to ease your transition on-campus as a study abroad student comes as no surprise. It doesn’t matter whether you’re there for a semester or an entire year — they’ll be there for you before you even board the plane.

The Study Abroad Unit has dedicated teams to help you navigate visa applications, and any legal steps. Accommodation in the University’s very own Halls of Residence is guaranteed as long as you apply before the deadline. They’ll even support you with your arrival in Leicester.

A vital part of the support offered is helping students to select and secure appropriate courses for study. The subject pool is wide open, with courses in the sciences, humanities, and the arts. They offer credits that can be transferred to your home university and can count towards your major, but you don’t necessarily have to be confined to your field of study. That was a massive draw for Fira, as a Marketing Communications major.

“I felt the learning process here is more efficient and I can feel improvement,” she says. “Dividing it into [a seminar and lecture] helped me focus and know what I am supposed to do before the classes, which equals me consciously doing self-study in preparation.”

If you do face any challenges with your studies, you don’t have to face them alone. There are award-winning faculty members dedicated to providing an immersive experience through teaching and learning, as well as further support from a range of professional services and even a Personal Tutor assigned to every student who you can reach out to any time.

Luke Edmonds, a student from Australia, was made aware of the resources available as soon as he arrived. The university organises a welcome week to kick off new students’ academic year — this ensures you quickly settle into the pace of university life, meeting new people and learning about their resources.

“Orientation activities run by student resident advisors was a great way to meet many other students with whom I have since formed friendships,” Luke says. “Leicester does an immaculate job making you feel part of the university.”

For Luke, coming to Leicester as a Human Resource Management major led him towards practical business courses delivered by the renowned School of Business. The way the university teaches its students how to correctly use artificial intelligence tools as a proper resource stood out to him.

A strong sense of belonging is crucial in evolving students into global citizens of change who can use cutting-edge research to impact society positively. Part of being a citizen of change comes with integrating yourself into the community at Leicester. With a student body and staff representing over 150 countries, you develop a broadened perspective and cultural literacy. Connections are made and strengthened across campus in spaces like the Global Lounge in the Charles Wilson Building or within the university’s 250 clubs and societies.

“Embracing the different cultures and traditions of students and peers around me has been exhilarating and no doubt will be indispensable as I transition into the workforce where situations of unfamiliarity are perpetual,” says Luke.

“My soft skills are constantly developing in this environment, particularly problem-solving and communication skills. The greatest insight I will bring back home is that despite myriads of cultural differences you may share with individuals, it is always possible to find a common ground.”
