Rockway Mennonite Collegiate: Transforming students into future leaders committed to building a better world

Rockway Mennonite Collegiate is indeed a small school for a big world. The benefits of learning at a small school are clear: every student is seen, heard and known. Rockway’s small class sizes enable teachers to get to know students more personally and help shape young lives through learning, opportunity, caring, and faith. They not only appreciate students for who they are, but also for who they aspire to be.

International students at Rockway have a full-time International Student Programme Coordinator who offers social and emotional support, ensuring that they feel confident and ready to fully take part in the Rockway Experience. In fact, for over the last four decades, this school has been home to students from 30 countries.

Rockway’s nurturing school environment prepares students to become responsible, global citizens whose futures are filled with purpose and impact.

Welcoming and inclusive community

As a Mennonite school, this is an inclusive community that welcomes students and families of all walks of faith and appreciates the richness that this diversity brings to their classrooms and school community. The goal here is to help students develop values that will guide them as they become leaders in their local communities and the global society.

Students come together twice-weekly for chapel. These chapels are led by teachers, fellow students, alumni and guest speakers from around the world. Within their diverse and supportive community, Rockway aims to open the world for their students as chapel speakers help them engage in issues such as fair trade, mutual aid, the environment, health, poverty, peacemaking, and many other needs in the local and global community.

This is a school committed to putting faith into action through service and social justice initiatives. Here you will find students spending their time raising funds for a local food bank, tending to the environment by “re-wilding” industrial sites through planting native seedlings and wildflowers, and participating in programmes such as their community peacebuilding certificate programme.

A door-opening education

A Rockway education is designed to challenge and inspire; the focus on values is evident in every aspect of the Rockway Experience. Academically, students benefit from small class sizes and a curriculum that emphasises critical thinking and problem-solving skills, in addition to diverse learning opportunities outside the classroom.

Fully accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education, Rockway awards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), ensuring that students meet the highest educational standards. Alongside the OSSD, students can earn the optional Rockway Diploma, which emphasises a life-long journey of faith formation and character building. Completion requires three Religious Studies courses in grades 9 to 12, a grade 12 Social Science or World Issues course, and 60 hours of community service — exceeding the 40 hours required by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

In addition to core classes, Rockway offers a wide variety of elective classes including Visual Arts, Robotics, and Business that allow students to explore their interests and expose them to new disciplines. As students move into grades 11 and 12, they explore their interests through senior-level courses which prepare them for college or university.

The Rockway Experience leads to outstanding outcomes — evidenced by high acceptance rates to top universities in Canada and abroad, either directly after graduation or following an intentional gap year of service, work, or travel experience. Alumni have excelled in almost every field, including medicine, law, engineering, science, music, the arts, athletics, social services, education and business.

It’s easy to develop world-changing aspirations when classes cover pressing global issues and focus on the impact students can truly have. “At Rockway, teachers empower their students to become peacemakers and agents for positive change,” says graduate Zainab Ramahi, who went on to the University of Waterloo before graduating from the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Law.

Learning beyond the classroom

Along with rigorous academics, Rockway’s extracurricular activities offer many opportunities to pursue passions and develop leadership skills. Whether interested in Visual Arts, Athletics, Vocal or Orchestral music, Robotics, Drama or Leadership Development — Rockway has something for everyone and students are encouraged to get involved.

Students also nurture their interests through competitive sports, performances at music festivals, participation in academic field trips and grade-specific excursions as well as have the opportunity for international travel. Over the years, exchange programmes have even taken Rockway students to France, Germany, Jordan, Guatemala and China. No matter where students go during or after their studies, they carry with them the essence of their Rockway Experience. As proud, lifelong members of this connected community, they remain grounded in the values and teachings that shaped them into who they are today.

“Rockway has nurtured my passions in all aspects of academia and team-building,” shares recent graduate Stefan Fieguth. “Every teacher has always been willing to teach beyond what is required and extend what the curriculum suggests. Rockway has also had a big impact on my school life through athletics and extracurriculars. Rockway’s focus on joining clubs and sports teams has greatly made my time more enjoyable.”
