Asian Institute of Hospitality Management: Top-ranked Swiss-style education in Thailand

The hospitality industry thrives in a world dealing with a big rebound on travel and experiences. Studying hospitality management in 2024 means getting equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate this dynamic sector and excel within it.

The best programmes go beyond learning to greet guests. They delve into business operations, marketing, and human resource management, fostering well-rounded business acumen. This, coupled with courses on customer service, event planning, and risk management, prepares graduates to tackle diverse hospitality roles.

Enter the Asian Institute of Hospitality Management (AIHM). Founded by Minor Hotels, a a company with over 550 hotels, resorts and branded residences across six continents, AIHM leverages an academic association with Les Roches, a globally recognised leader who consistently ranks among the top four worldwide in hospitality education. This unique collaboration offers students the best of many worlds: Swiss-style education with an international perspective as well as access to Minor Hotels’s network, Les Roches, and over 35,000 hospitality professionals, and the benefit of AIHM’s dynamic programmes.

For decades, Asian students seeking an international hospitality education often ventured westward. Today, AIHM offers a world-class education closer to home. Situated in Thailand, a nation welcoming over 23 million tourists in 2023 and more than 10 million tourist arrivals from January to April 2024, AIHM has campuses in Bangkok, arguably the region’s most loved city by tourists, and Pattaya, a famed hub for travellers. The Bangkok campus is located within the Avani+ Hotel, with direct access to the acclaimed Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort. The Pattaya campus allows students to learn from resort operations through dedicated field trips.

AIHM follows the Les Roches Swiss experiential learning model, combining theory with real-world opportunities. Students learn from hotel professionals, practise their skills, and gain valuable industry connections – all while remaining close to home. To add an edge to their AIHM qualification, students can intern at Minor Hotels’s over 500 establishments worldwide.

“AIHM provides a programme where we can turn what we learn in class into real practice in a real hotel environment interacting with real guests,” she says. “Since the front office department is the hotel’s core, I believe that I’ll be able to learn more about the industry as a whole and keep up with the upcoming trends and information since the hospitality industry is always transforming and changing.”

A range of programmes to suit your needs

AIHM offers a variety of programmes to cater to different needs. The flagship programme is the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Global Hospitality Management, a 3.5-year programme mirroring the curriculum at Les Roches. As it’s hands-on, students network with established brands and professionals, witness the inner workings of five-star hotels, and learn from award-winning customer service teams. The result? A solid start to thriving careers in hospitality, international tourism, or even entrepreneurial ventures.

For those seeking a more focused programme, consider the Certificate in International Hotel Administration. This 18-month programme, ideal for working professionals, delivers many of the benefits of Swiss hospitality education in a shorter time frame. The first year of coursework at the AIHM Bangkok campus is followed by a six-month work-based project or internship. Graduates can transition to the full BBA programme through an additional three semesters of study.

Continuous learning is crucial in the dynamic hospitality industry. Recognising this, AIHM designed Executive Education Courses that impart new skills and tools that can be immediately applied at work. Short, engaging, and interactive, the modules have topics ranging from strategy and performance management to public speaking and personal branding. Courses can also be tailored to the specific needs of companies.

Hospitality skills fit for multiple career paths

A hospitality degree is a gateway to diverse career paths beyond traditional hotel and restaurant management. The core skills developed through the programme, particularly a customer-centric approach, are highly sought-after across various sectors. Graduates can pursue careers in banks, airlines, and other public-facing industries, demonstrating the versatility of an AIHM education. What’s more, the strong business foundation provided by the programme empowers graduates to pursue corporate roles and launch their own start-ups.

Whichever programme they emerge from, students describe the AIHM community as friendly, supportive, and encouraging, with a strong sense of camaraderie. Just ask Mariia Kulakhszian, an AIHM student who feels very lucky to be at AIHM as she gets to learn many different kinds of roles. “People here are so friendly, very kind and very supportive. We work as a team, motivate each other, and care for each other like family.”
