University of Tennessee Health Science Center: Accelerate your healthcare career with accredited certificate programmes

Qualified professionals are in demand in the healthcare sectors, driven by factors like a growing population, ageing demographics, and the prevalence of chronic diseases. The Bureau of Labour Statistics predicts that healthcare employment will grow faster from 2022 to 2032, with 1.8 million openings projected each year. This has always been a promising field and it’s showing no signs of slowing down, offering many opportunities for individuals seeking to contribute to the well-being of communities.

If you’re drawn to the prospect of contributing to the field of healthcare, why not do so by studying at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC)? A healthy society thrives on a foundation of healthy communities — UTHSC realises this through its six colleges offering four undergraduate degrees, over 30 graduate or professional degrees, and various certificate programmes.

Traditionally, a career in healthcare has been synonymous with extensive education and hefty degrees. That’s no longer the case today. UTHSC acknowledges the evolving needs of contemporary learners and provides alternatives for individuals seeking to enter the field without committing to lengthy programmes.

This is where accredited certificate programmes come in. These certificates are emerging as a valuable way for individuals, particularly working professionals, seeking to acquire essential skills and credentials without making personal and professional sacrifices. What’s more, it is a flexible and cost-effective option to upskill yourself.

One such programme offered at the UTHSC  is the Certificate in Clinical Investigation. This non-degree programme equips you with the essential skills and training required to navigate the rapidly expanding field of clinical research. Being 100% online, the 12-credit hour certificate programme fits those whose schedules may not easily allow conventional, classroom-based courses.

The best part? You can pace your coursework and glean insights from experienced scholars from the College of Graduate Health Sciences. Amy Brewer, a senior research staff who completed the programme while working full-time, did just that.

“I feel the clinical investigation certificate course has enhanced my understanding of research above my current working knowledge,” she says. “It was worth the time and effort.  My eyes were opened to aspects of research I was unaware of. The experience has increased my ability to better critically review research, to discuss research with colleagues, and to talk about research with students.”

The programme, typically completed within two terms, fall and spring, equips you with a comprehensive understanding of biostatistics, epidemiology, and the fundamentals of clinical investigation. You will also have the option to specialise in either Health Disparities or Health Behavior Intervention tracks, allowing you to tailor your curriculum to specific interests.

Another noteworthy programme is the Healthcare Quality Improvement Certificate. This 12-credit certificate programme, offered by the Institute for Health Outcomes and Policy (IHOP), empowers healthcare professionals to manage populations of patients to optimise the efficiency and effectiveness of care and services. You will also gain expertise in various techniques, including statistical process control, operations research, information management technology, and qualitative decision-making.

The result? You’ll know how to develop, implement, and evaluate quality improvement initiatives, translate quality standards into practice, analyse and interpret data, and leverage information technology to enhance patient outcomes.

The programme’s hybrid format caters to working professionals, offering flexibility with mostly online coursework paired with face-to-face sessions with video conferencing capabilities. It typically takes two terms (fall and spring) to complete and involves core courses like Quality Management in Health Services and Health System Seminar, along with electives such as Mentored Quality Improvement Project, Improving Patient Flow, Biostatistics for Public Health, Introduction to Health Disparities, and Epidemiology.

Whether you’re a recent graduate seeking to embark on a healthcare career or a seasoned professional looking to upskill, UTHSC certificate programmes are the way to go. Lucianne Olewinski, a faculty that completed one of the online certificate programmes while working full-time, agrees. “Overall, I liked the programme. I am happy to have done it, and I would 100% make the choice again,” she says.
