The University of Texas at Arlington’s Department of Kinesiology is host to several nationally recognised graduate programmes in various fields related to Kinesiology (i.e., exercise science, motor control, biomechanics, etc.), Athletic Training, and Public Health. Each programme provides students academic, research and practical experiences, with leading faculty experts. Whether it’s to achieve better health or to improve the human condition, programmes here are exceptional — they stand out for their excellence and innovation.
“We have growing Kinesiology and public health programmes, with accompanying research areas that investigate across the full array of translational research, and are training exceptional future health care professionals and leaders in their respective field,” says David Keller, Associate Dean and Chair of Kinesiology, in the Department of Kinesiology, housed in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation.
Keller heads the Department of Kinesiology, which is part of the college and UTA’s mission to improve health and the human condition as our society moves into the 21st century. The department, an active member of the American Kinesiology Association (AKA), offers three master’s programmes – a Master of Science in Exercise Science (and associated doctoral programme), a Master of Science in Athletic Training, and Master of Public Health.
Each emphasises scientific theory, hands-on learning in the laboratory setting, and real-world application through clinical internships and other field-based experiences. All are led by professors and instructors with vast teaching experience, research expertise, and commitment to provide rich learning experiences for students across all of the department’s academic programmes.
The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a student-centred and practice-focused programme which is perfect for those who want to improve the health of their community, state, nation or world — as well as to prepare for a career that directly impacts people and communities.
There are numerous ways in which this particular master’s stands out from the crowd. The university understands the demands of juggling your career and advanced education, hence why many courses offer a hybrid format, allowing for fewer in-person classes.
UT Arlington offers concentrations in Epidemiology and Urban Health (the latter is the only one of its kind in Texas). Like all programmes in the Department of Kinesiology , the MPH is led by public health leaders who have insight into their field as they practise the skills they teach.
Some faculty work as leaders in prestigious public health organisations in North Texas. With their wide experience, the instructors pass on applied skills used in actual public health practices. This hands-on learning experience is furthered by the integration of classroom learning with real community-based projects. Almost every MPH course features this kind of practical component.
Another hands-on programme is the Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT), which is designed specifically to help students be ready for the Board of Certification Inc. (BOC) examination and licensure in any state. Those who join this two-year cohort-based professional degree, have access to an award-winning faculty — who are recognised at the state, regional and national levels — dedicated purely to the MSAT.
UT Arlington’s MSAT programme produces impressive results: on the National Board of Certification Athletic Trainer Exam, the school has a 95% first-time pass rate over the last three years (the national average is about 70%). These figures are possible because of the experienced educators, the many clinical rotation options, and state-of-the-art sports medicine facilities.
Throughout a minimum of six semesters (including two 11-week summer sessions), lecturers and instructors ensure every class and lab session is in-depth. They focus on injury prevention, assessment and diagnosis, acute care, and therapeutic interventions for managing musculoskeletal injuries and common medical conditions in physically active individuals. Didactic, laboratory, and clinical components of the programme are structured around the CAATE 2020 Professional Standards. Students are required to finish two years of clinical education experience under the supervision of a programme-approved preceptor.
For advanced-level training in Exercise Science, choose the STEM-designated Master of Science in Exercise Science. This program provides state of the art learning experiences focused on Building Healthier Lives through Physical Activity. Students get exposed to scientific theory, hands-on laboratory-based experiences, and real-world application through clinical internships and field-based experiences. Students work with national and international experts in the field and gain skillsets needed for doctoral study in integrative and applied physiology, movement and rehabilitation sciences, or physical education. Students are prepared for employment in clinically oriented environments, associated with physical activity and rehabilitation such as cardiac rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, or sports medicine. Students are also provided opportunities to enhance the theoretical background and skills needed for employment in Physical and Health Education.
Graduates can opt for a Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology too. UT Arlington’s programme is ranked in the top 25 PhD programmes in Kinesiology in the US. Candidates explore a wide range of topics: questions concerning the prevention, assessment, and treatment of motor difficulties, chronic diseases, and musculoskeletal injuries.
Both curriculum and research focus incorporate basic and clinical science approaches to identify disease markers and mechanisms, as well as evidence-based interventions designed to prevent and treat specific health conditions such as chronic illnesses and injuries in vulnerable and at-risk populations comprised of obese, older, and/or minority persons. Whatever your research interests or career goals, you can personalise the programme with your advisor.
Whether you decide to opt for an MPH, MSAT, Master of Science in Exercise Science or a PhD in Kinesiology, the Department of Kinesiology has exemplary faculty, cutting-edge facilities and hands-on curricula that will progress your knowledge and career.
