Last November, MBA student Neelu Malhotra visited The Hut Group (THG) – a British e-commerce retail company headquartered in Manchester. It was the start of Business Practice Week for Nottingham University Business School’s MBA class of 2023 — kicking off with a host of speakers ranging from graduate students that had risen in the company to former British Olympic cyclist Callum Skinner.
“The week was filled with lectures and presentations from notable speakers, ranging from leadership, communication, workflow management through digitalisation, and purchasing and supply chain management,” she says.
Malhotra learned a lot. Fresh insights and new knowledge complemented what she and her classmates gained from classroom lectures and group discussions. “In one week, my fellow students came up with great solutions and ideas that would work for this community action organisation and a social justice charity, working to reduce poverty and to achieve race and education equality,” she says.
Whatever your vision, goal or ambition, a Nottingham MBA will give you an edge. Here’s why:
1. World-class reputation and rankings
A Nottingham MBA student pursues their programme in an ecosystem of excellence. Their programme is fourth in the UK and top 70 globally, as ranked by The Economist. In the 2022 Corporate Knights Better World MBA top 40 rankings, Nottingham University Business School rose to 29th in the world for sustainable management education and faculty research. The University of Nottingham is a founding member of the elite Russell Group of universities, which is ranked seventh in the UK for research power (REF2021) and rated gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
2. Accreditation and awards
Nottingham University Business School holds the “triple crown” accreditation from the three most influential accrediting organisations: AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS. They are a testament to the highest standards of business education the university holds itself to.
Perhaps just as impactful is the Small Business Charter which was awarded in 2019 in recognition of its role in working with British enterprises. The award lets the business school play an active role in schemes such as Growth Vouchers, Growth Accelerators and Start-Up Loans provided by the UK government.
3. International study tour
A Nottingham MBA can take you far — and quite literally in the case of its international MBA study tours. Students go on field visits to organisations in one of threedestinations in the USA, Malaysia, and China. In the past, students have gone to emerging markets like Shanghai, Ningbo, Beijing, and Taiwan, which included visits to companies like Lenovo and Tencent.
As students forge an expansive view of the global business landscape, they get to reflect on the application of theory to practical business management issues. “The MBA enabled me to use academic knowledge and approaches to explore strategic insights of any business,” says MBA student Yafei Yu.
4. Business Practice Week
Business Practice Week is a vital feature of the Nottingham MBA. It allows students to visit international, national, and small-medium enterprises. During this initiative, students are introduced to business strategies, practices, and challenges that businesses face daily — enabling them to build their competence in leadership, strategic approaches, critical thinking, inclusivity, innovation and more.
“Business Practice Week was one of my favourite parts of the fall semester,” says MBA graduate Jacquelyn Laughlin. “I loved the exposure to different industries. Being able to further my education and learn while helping the community – there is no better feeling.”
5. Lifelong career support and worldwide alumni network
Nottingham MBA students get plenty of guidance and support from a dedicated Postgraduate Careers Team. The MBA Career Development Programme is integrated into MBA modules. There are one-on-one coaching sessions on career planning, job search strategies, as well as recruitment and selection processes. Reflective activities help students identify skills, experience, and personality styles. There is access to specialist resources such as Career Leader, MBA Exchange, Pay Negotiation, professional development webinars, and a variety of psychometric assessments as well.
Exclusive events and global networking opportunities empower students to make important connections beyond campus. For international students, there are talks from UK immigration experts on how to explore work in different countries too. “Our MBA career development activities are integrated within your studies and complemented by individual career coaching, networking events and access to specialist resources,” says Julie Blant, Head of Business School Postgraduate Careers.
