“Staff consistently prove that they are willing to go above and beyond to enhance your personalised experience, taking a really genuine interest in your ideas and journey.”
The student experience is an intricate puzzle formed of a series of moments. Big or small, academic or personal, these moments blend and become a learning journey that’s truly transformational.
The University of Surrey is an inspiring environment empowered by both people and ideas, also maintaining the utmost dedication to life-changing research and education. Set on a self-contained, vibrant, friendly campus in a bordering London county, the institution is known for award-winning teaching that motivates graduate success.
This flourishing global community is set in the bustling town of Guildford, nestled in the heart of southeast England while excellent rail and road links keep you connected to London’s thriving scene.
Revered as an ‘outstanding’ institution, Surrey’s Gold-standard TEF rating is a true feather in its cap. This prestigious accolade serves as testament to the passion of the institution’s ground-breaking faculties, also elevating students to their greatest potential as they prepare for a bright future ahead.
“I’ve loved being in the labs and getting to see first-hand how the processes work,” says Sai Save, BSc Biomedical Science student at Surrey. “Sometimes, when I find it difficult to grasp a certain concept, we’d have a practical experiment on it and it would make sense once I saw it in action.”
The library and learning centre are considered the student hubs on campus. Open 24/7, these spaces provide a range of learning spaces, including silent rooms and social areas, as well as the latest technology and equipment for interactive and digital knowledge acquisition.
An integral service of the library is SPLASH (Student Personal Learning and Study Hub), which hosts regular drop-in sessions, workshops and one-to-one discussions designed to help students with the core regions of academic, personal and professional development. Topics here include academic writing, referencing, research skills, employment prep and revision cafés.
The institution also offers a confidential support service for students with additional learning needs, open to those with disabilities and specific learning difficulties.
This institution also lends a helping hand when it comes to student jobs. UniTemps, Surrey’s in-house recruitment agency, helps students and recent graduates find work within the region, as well as within the university itself.
Roles range from research support and university administration, to survey participation and graduation ceremony assistance. Since the institution is located a mere stone’s throw from the centre of Guildford, there are also local opportunities for work in shops, bars and restaurants.
Surrey prepares students for the working world. A vast majority pursue Professional Training placements as an integrated part of their degree. The institution is known for its excellent rates of graduate employment, with the Higher Education Statistics Agency revealing that 93 percent of Surrey’s 2017 graduates were in work or further study within six months of graduation.
Professional training placements are a signature part of Surrey’s undergraduate programmes. Every year, the majority of students embark on a placement in industry, receiving ample support in finding a placement through the university’s Employability and Careers service. The service has formed relationships with 2,300 business partners who regularly offer placements and training to Surrey students.
Many return to university with a fresh perspective and a whole new set of skills – a perk that helps them excel throughout their final year.
“The opportunity to do a Professional Training placement was definitely a contributing factor in my decision to come to Surrey,” says Fahmid Chowdhury, BEng Mechanical Engineering.
“Having researched the university online from my home in Zambia, I was impressed with the many links Surrey has with the mechanical engineering industry and the fact that it cares not only about how students do academically but also about their future career prospects.”
Beyond the family feel and pursuit of knowledge, Surrey embodies an intrinsically exciting and enriching way of life. From the very first time you set foot on campus to that monumental graduation day, you’ll be creating sentimental moments and memories that will last a lifetime.
“I think the best moments at university have been socialising with friends that I will keep for life,” explains Richard Banbrook, a student of Surrey’s BSc in Economics.
“When I arrived at university, I was a rather shy and introverted person. I think university has really allowed me to grow in confidence, meet great people, gain real life experience and develop great skills.”
Surrey will ignite your passion for your subject, introduce you to lifelong friends and brand-new interests, kick-start your career and equip you for the future. Along the way, this vibrant community encourages you to make the most of countless opportunities for academic, professional and personal growth.
