Born and raised in Pakistan, Sumbal Noureen completed her bachelor’s degree in her home country before embarking on a global search for a postgraduate programme. Greater quality, diversity, and equal opportunity were high on her list of criteria, and Salford Business School at the University of Salford stood out.
“I chose the University of Salford after a thorough search of comparing different universities across the UK,” Noureen says. “The university has a diverse culture — students from all ethnic groups are represented and get equal opportunities. That was one of the important factors that grabbed my attention.”
The impact of Noureen’s decision was immediate. “Studying at the University of Salford was the best choice I could have made,” she says. Even before her final dissertation grades were in, she landed a coveted position at Lloyds Banking Group. “This is clear evidence of how easy I found my job search,” she says. “As soon as I graduated, I was ready to start my career in the industry which I once dreamed of working in.”
A global institution for global students
Established in 1967, the University of Salford has become a global hub for education, serving over 23,000 students, 4,500 international students, 2,500 staff, and an alumni network of 170,000. Noureen is part of one of its four schools: Salford Business School where you’ll find programmes like MSc Managing AI in Business, MSc Financial Technology, MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation, MSc Managing Innovation and Information Technology, and LLM Global Business Law and Regulation.
Each programme offers practical knowledge, forward-looking skills and expert insights. Just ask Tauseef Ahmad Chughtai, an MSc Human Resource Management graduate.
“The practical focus of my course equipped me with skills such as conducting HR audits, designing employee development programmes, implementing performance management systems and most importantly organisational restructuring,” he says. “These skills have been instrumental in my current role where I oversee HR operations, change management and support organisational growth.”
Career-focused and industry-informed
Situated in the heart of Greater Manchester’s dynamic five billion pound business and digital sector, Salford Business School leverages industry links to prepare students to lead change in the fast-paced world of business. Students work closely with sector leaders to design master’s programmes that equip graduates with the skills employers actively seek.
Courses are heavily focused on learning by doing. As a student here, you’ll have many and varied ways to engage with industry through live briefs, collaborative projects, and placements. Most of the school’s staff have extensive industry experience, bringing a wealth of knowledge and real-world connections to the classroom. They use their networks to invite leading guest speakers to share their expertise with students.
A specialist employability team, housed within the school itself, offers a range of services to support students in their job search and placement endeavours. This includes sending regular emails with new placement opportunities or graduate job listings and organising Employability Week in both trimester 1 and 2, where students can engage with industry partners through live presentations, speed networking, and interactive workshops.
With such a start at this school, it’s little wonder students go on to placements or graduate jobs at Syngenta, Amazon, NHS, BNY Mellon, Dyson, Unilever, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and Salford City Council. Graduate Arjun Ravisankar, who completed a placement with Dyson, can attest to this.
“The employability team at Salford Business School were amazing: really helpful in securing my visa to allow me to take part in the placement,” he says. “They can help you with anything from updating your CV to practising for interviews. They were instrumental in helping me secure my placement with Dyson.”
Your employability is a big focus here — as can be seen in the school’s annual Dean’s Employability Award. This award recognises students who demonstrate the 10 most valuable employability skills identified by industry partners. What’s more, the school embraces technology to enhance new ways of learning and equip students with in-demand skills. Virtual Reality headsets and body swap technology allow you to hone key skills like negotiation and interview techniques in a safe, simulated environment. With refined skills, you’ll be more confident about whatever the future brings.
If you’re an international student, you can be part of the postgraduate peer mentoring system. The school pairs new international postgraduate students with senior students who can guide them through university systems, help them adjust to a new environment, and answer any questions they may have. The Ambassador programme provides another layer of support and development. This is where you can sharpen skills like leadership and communication through paid ambassador roles. These roles involve helping out with university events and taking part in training and promotion within the programme.
“I worked as a Student Marshal on University of Salford Open Day, and it was a great experience for me,” Chughtai says. “I worked with students of different nationalities and learned a lot about their culture.”
