University of Chester: Where aspiring health professionals find support and success

Nursing is just as much about science as it is about showing up, when it’s joyful, when it’s complex, and especially when it matters most. It is taking sick children on Easter egg hunts around the garden and seeing their excitement. It is supporting vulnerable adults in taking greater control of their finances while shopping. It is person-centred care that respects and responds to a patient’s unique needs, values, and preferences.

“I’ve been part of some of the more complex and emotional aspects of care too,” student Tom Shennan says. “I’ve worked with palliative care teams and seen the delicate, often fraught decisions involved in using restraint. I’ve taken part in assessments under both the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act as well. These gave me a deep understanding for the weight and responsibility that comes with supporting people in vulnerable moments.”

Stories like Tom is a big reason why the University of Chester is ranked in the top five in North West England for graduates in high-skilled employment. Their training is extensive and hands-on, immersing them in local communities to tackle real-world challenges. It’s an expert balance of theory and practice that has equipped Tom with “both the knowledge and the resilience to tackle the challenges of this profession.”

All students achieve this level of success here. The University of Chester is ranked #1 in the UK for international student support (International Student Barometer Survey) and support beyond course completion. From arrival to graduation — and well into professional life – you’ll be guided, challenged, and encouraged to grow.

    Professionally and globally recognised degrees

Tom is pursuing a Learning Disability Nursing BN (Hons), a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)-registered course that includes a range of clinical simulations and practice learning, delivered by experienced registered nurses and award-winning lecturers. For those drawn to other areas of care, other specialisations offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery include Adult Nursing, Children’s Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, and an Integrated Masters.

If your ambition lies in medicine more broadly, the Graduate Entry Medicine MBChB is for you. This four-year degree welcomes students who want to pursue a career as a doctor or a healthcare practitioner. You’ll gain the scientific and clinical knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours required of a 21st-century doctor. Case-based learning, combined with community and hospital-based placements, ensure this. Eligible graduates can provisionally register with the General Medical Council (providing you meet all the GMC’s Fitness to Practice requirements) and apply for Year 1 of the UK Foundation Programme (UKFPO)

Alternatively, if you’re more interested in the science behind health and disease, the Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) is an ideal option. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of human health and disease and crucial laboratory skills in demand by employers today. At Chester Medical School‘s Bache Hall, modern equipment, expert practitioners, and active researchers — some of whom bring valuable experience from the National Health Service (NHS) — provide the exposure and guidance that’ll make you a standout graduate.

Curious about the human mind and how it works? Choose the Psychology BSc (Hons), accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). You’ll explore the complexities of human thought, emotions, and actions, whether in the context of understanding mental health, social psychology, or cognitive processes. There are two pathways: Developmental Psychology, where you will focus on development across the human lifespan, and Clinical and Health Psychology, focusing on human mental health, behaviour, and physical health.

    Forward-thinking learning, historic city

From a well-stocked library to digital research databases, campus is filled with many facilities and tools that sharpen thinking and deepen understanding. Seminars and workshops enhance the environment further, with a frequent roster of lively conversations between peers, guest speakers, and industry professionals.

Mounia enjoys the research labs most. “Experimenting with high-tech equipment provided by the university during the psychology lab groups is one of my favourite things the course has to offer,” says the student from Morocco.

Her education here has inspired her to dream bigger. She now plans to pursue a master’s course in the paediatric neuropsychology field. “I’ve done some work experience at an autism centre in Tangier, Morocco, where I worked one-on-one with the kids,” she says. “Going through this experience makes me realise my passion for helping others, especially children who need psychological help.”

The university’s sense of community and togetherness is another highlight of Mounia’s time here. You can sense it “whether it’s in the lecture halls with classmates, the sports hall with teammates, or in society meetings with fellow members,” she says. “Joining a society and a volleyball team has helped me leave my comfort zone and take the first step in making friends.”

The city itself is just as inclusive, named the most welcoming city in the UK and in the top 10 globally. When students aren’t busy preparing for life after graduation, they’re out exploring the beautiful Chester Cathedral and the unique two-tiered medieval shopping galleries known as the Rows – often with newfound friends.

Mounia finds Chester to be “charming and student-friendly,” calling it “the perfect balance of historic and modern, making it a comfortable and enjoyable place to live and study.”
