Studying for a diploma in Australia usually takes a year to complete. At the Sydney Institute of Business and Technology (SIBT), it can be done in as little as eight months. You can then skip the first year of a bachelor’s degree and fast-track to the second year of the program at Western Sydney University, Sydney City Campus. It’s a great way to accelerate your degree – finishing a bachelor’s degree in two years instead of three.
“They accepted my eight units of credit, and I jumped to year two at Western Sydney University with my Diploma of Information Technology certificate,” says student Noor Rifat. “I finished my diploma at SIBT which was equivalent to attending the first year of Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology at Western Sydney University, so I don’t have to start from the beginning.”
SIBT offers diploma programs in a wide range of fields. These include Business, Engineering, Information Technology, and Communication and Creative Industries. They are ideal for those who want to attend university but don’t meet the direct entry requirements for university yet.
Take the newly improved Diploma of Business, for example. After completing the diploma, students can move on to a Bachelor of Accounting or Bachelor of Business with specialisations in International Business, Management, Marketing, Accounting, or Applied Finance. Any of these degrees provides a strong grounding in the subject, which, in turn, translates to better career prospects. Australian students can choose to go straight to work too, as the diploma alone qualifies them for entry-level professional roles.
Another revamped program is the Diploma of Information Technology, where students are introduced to the basics of computer science with an emphasis on software design, information systems, and web design. With the diploma, students can proceed to a Bachelor of Information Communications Technology (specialising in Networking and Cloud Computing or Software Development) or a Bachelor of Information Systems (focusing on Big Data, Mobile Computing, or Networking).
The new Diploma of Communication and Creative Industries replaces the Diploma of Media and Communication to give you a broader understanding of global media and communication industries and potentially lead to a wide range of roles involving professional communication skills or creative storytelling. It will still fast-track students to the Bachelor of Communication program and now the Bachelor of Creative Industries.
The Diploma of Engineering, on the other hand, covers the foundations of the civil, electrical, and mechanical sectors. If you decide to pursue engineering after completing this diploma, you can choose either a Bachelor of Engineering Honours or a Bachelor of Engineering Science to specialise in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical.
John Mallia, who earned a Diploma in Engineering and now in the second year of his Bachelor of Engineering degree, chose to take the Electrical Engineering route. “What I really love about this degree is the learning topics are relevant, and it’s focused on getting you into the workforce as soon as you graduate,” he says.
Whichever diploma program you join, you’ll get the support you need both academically and personally. SIBT makes sure of this. With its small-sized classes, every student gets the attention of lecturers, encouraging fruitful conversations, Q&A sessions, and group discussions, all of which are beneficial to learning effectively. Students can also refer to the Student Learning Advisors for more support, guidance, and service on any matter. All of these are provided so that you get the best education and experience at SIBT.
Located at the heart of Sydney’s central business district, SIBT is conveniently co-located in the same building as Western Sydney University, Sydney City Campus. As it’s very close to all modes of transport, you have easy and full access to all the best our city has to offer. Shopping and service centres are just minutes away from the campus. When you’re done with classes, you can relax at Hyde Park which is just directly across the campus or visit the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, both of which are just within walking distance.
