How to study in Italy for free

It’s little wonder students flock to study in Italy as it’s the birthplace of pasta, Leonardo da Vinci and “gelato” (frozen dessert). However, reasons go further and beyond impeccable gastronomy and a famous Renaissance painter.

For one, fashion mavens who study in Italy are in the mecca of style and trends. Milan, the country’s clothing hub, is also home to the biggest high-end shopping district and headquarters to some of the world’s biggest brands such as Prada, Gucci, Versace and Armani.

Besides fashion, art students can rejoice as the country’s contribution to this world is unfathomable. Centuries of art movements including classical art, renaissance and arte povera, are all found in museums, galleries, buildings, and even the streets in this boot-shaped country.

Plus, out of the nearly 100 unis in the country, about 30 of them are listed in QS World University Rankings as top-tier institutions. For instance, the University of Bologna (the oldest in the world) and Politecnico di Milano, are some of the many internationally highly-regarded centres for higher education. 

Here, tuition fees tend to be more affordable, especially at public unis — an average undergraduate programme would cost an international student about 890 to 4,200 euros a year. With the help of scholarships, however, it’s even possible to study in Italy for free.

University of Bologna

To study in Italy, the University of Bologna would be one of the best choices as it’s the largest institution in the country. Here, there are plenty of options for international students that include study grants and exemptions, incentives, paid tutoring activities, prizes and subsidies.

Politecnico di Milano

There are three types of merit-based scholarships at this prestigious institution that are awarded to highly-deserving students. The PLATINUM Scholarship is worth 10,000 euros a year with a tuition waiver, the GOLD Scholarship is 5,000 euros and a tuition waiver and the SILVER Scholarship covers the total amount of fees for the academic year.

For the fall semester in 2022, if you want to study in Italy at Politecnico di Milano, the applications open this coming January and the deadline is April 20.

EDISU Piemonte Scholarship

EDISU Piemonte is the Regional Agency for the Right to University Education of Piemonte. This is an international mobility grant awarded to students enrolled in a Piedmontese University who’s part of an international mobility project sponsored by their uni.
