Stoneleigh-Burnham School: An accessible education for future female leaders

Stoneleigh-Burnham School (SBS) is leading the way in making education accessible to tomorrow’s female leaders. Located in Greenfield, Massachusetts, the all-girls school for grades seven to 12 (and postgraduate) has significantly reduced its 2020-21 day tuition by upwards of 40%. Additionally, Stoneleigh-Burnham has decreased its 2021-2022 boarding tuition by 16%. “It was always the plan to reduce both day and boarding tuition, and I am immensely proud that the school’s new tuition rates will make an SBS education possible for more students,” said SBS Head of School, Stephanie Luebbers.

SBS’s new tuition rates place the School at a position to inspire change across the US, with its boarding tuition now costing lower than the national average by approximately 10%. “We are committed to taking the lead in addressing the tuition crisis in the US by making an SBS education a possibility for a much wider range of students,” says Assistant Head of School for Enrollment and Strategy, Kristen Mariotti.

Ultimately, this was a decision in line with the School’s mission. Founded in 1869, SBS is committed to attracting a talented and diverse student body that come from a variety of backgrounds. This multinational community includes girls from over 15 states in the US and more than a dozen countries around the world — and these numbers are continuously growing.

Combined with the SBS culture of acceptance is a culture of achievement. Research has confirmed time and time again that an all-girls learning environment inspires young women and empowers them to aim higher. These learners are known to be more successful compared to their co-ed peers — a statement proven to be true by 25% of women in Congress and 33% of Fortune 500’s female board members.

What prepares the dynamic girls of SBS for future success is a stellar curriculum. SBS was the first all-girls boarding school in New England to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Recognised internationally, the IB encourages students in grades 11 and 12 to think and draw connections across disciplines. The best part? They get to decide how they will engage with the programme. They could pursue the full programme, take IB courses for certification or partake in courses without sitting for the exam. Whichever route they choose, the outcomes remain outstanding. SBS boasts a 100% college acceptance rate with graduates progressing to some of the world’s most esteemed universities, including Boston University, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, Princeton University and Syracuse University.

SBS girls are just as accomplished outside the classroom. Prestigious programmes and top-notch facilities make this possible. SBS is the only secondary school in the US to offer the British Horse Society (BHS) Certification Programme, which is recognised in 32 countries, allowing ,students to get a head start in preparing for a professional career in riding instruction, stable management, and horse training. The school is also a certified BHS facility and a certified BHS testing centre.

The world-class Debate and Public Speaking Society teaches students core communication skills such as speaking with confidence, developing arguments, and practising self-advocacy. “The Speech & Debate programme really goes to the mission of the school which is having students’ voices heard,” shares co-director of the Speech and Debate Society Karen Pleasant. “Our job is to teach students how to communicate effectively and have confidence in what they’re saying.” SBS is a place where pupils can learn how to think analytically, see all sides of the debate, and communicate effectively. The School’s students have qualified for the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships for the past 8 consecutive years.
