Schulich School of Business: Empowering Future Leaders to Drive Innovation in a Technology-First World

Simrat Atwal is passionate about improving lives through the integration of technology and healthcare. As an undergraduate, she majored in psychology and biology, developing a strong interest in understanding human behaviour and biological systems. This later developed into a deep interest in digital solutions, healthcare, and the intersection of technology and data.

Sensing an unmissable opportunity to turn this passion into a career, Atwal pursued an MBA in Technology Leadership (Tech MBA) from the Schulich School of Business at York University. With its strong focus on innovation and a diverse network of peers and industry experts, the programme – the only one of its kind in Canada – was ideal to realise her ambition: leveraging AI and digital tools to address some of the healthcare sector’s most pressing challenges.

“Joining the inaugural Tech MBA cohort at Schulich was an opportunity I knew I couldn’t pass up,” Atwal says. “This programme stood out to me for its unique integration of technology and business, offering an invaluable perspective that is rare to find elsewhere.”

Spanning 16 months, the Schulich School of Business at York University’s Tech MBA includes guaranteed workplace internships, direct exposure to industry leaders in Toronto’s thriving tech scene, and career support.

Tech MBA: How to win in an era where every company is a tech company

Recognised as Canada’s top business school, Schulich is synonymous with innovation, diversity, and global reach. It’s ranked #1 in Canada and among the top 30 globally for careers in Finance, Technology, and Information Management (QS’s 2023 MBA Careers by Specialisation).

Programmes here – Master of Business Analytics, Master of Management in Artificial Intelligence, and the Tech MBA – are specialised and the first of their kind in Canada.

“In a world constantly reshaped by technology, businesses need leaders who think like entrepreneurs — leaders who are tech-savvy, agile, and ready to manage disruption,” says Detlev Zwick, Dean of the Schulich School of Business. “Schulich’s Tech MBA produces precisely those leaders, individuals ready to drive transformation in any industry, from tech-focused firms to traditional companies embracing digital change.”

Alongside case studies, simulations, guest lectures, mandatory internships, and a capstone field project, the programme provides exposure and engagement to Toronto’s thriving tech ecosystem.

But what sets the programme apart is its fusion of technology and business strategy. Instead of focusing solely on technical skills or theoretical concepts, it prioritises the practical application of technology in real-world business settings.

“This approach is unique because it goes beyond teaching technical tools,” Atwal says. “It equips us to make strategic decisions about technology implementation that align with broader business goals.”

Upon completion, students will be well-prepared in key areas like technology, AI, and data, skills that are invaluable in the tech industry.

Tech MBA graduates have another edge: an unmatched network. Its mentorship programme pairs students with industry leaders from day one. Atwal credits much of her growth to her mentor and Schulich graduate: Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Lead Data Scientist at Skinopathy. The company creates data-centric and AI-powered digital health tools that screen, triage, track, and manage all skin conditions – highly relevant to what Atwal herself aims to achieve.

“Working with Rakesh has been a profound learning experience. His extensive industry knowledge and strategic insights have opened my eyes to the unique challenges and opportunities in tech-driven startups, particularly those in healthcare,” she says.

The programme benefits just as much from the Tech MBA Advisory Council, a group of influential leaders like Riddhi Sen (Director at Citi) and David Markwell (EVP and Chief Technology and Analytics Officer at Loblaw Companies). Their guidance ensures the curriculum reflects challenges and opportunities across various industries

“David Markwell’s insights on leveraging technology for business transformation profoundly influenced my approach,” Atwal says. “His expertise highlighted the importance of aligning tech initiatives with strategic goals and customer needs, teaching me to think critically about the purpose and impact of technology in any organisation.”

The Venture Studio, led by award-winning Adjunct Professor Chris Carder, adds another layer of expertise, i.e. what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur. It has helped Atwal refine her work with Brizo FoodMetrics, a data-driven platform that offers actionable insights for the food and beverage industry.

“Through the Venture Studio, I gained access to a vast network of mentors, practical workshops, and opportunities to develop skills critical to the startup world,” she says. “These experiences pushed me to apply my knowledge directly to real-world challenges, helping me build expertise in market analysis, competitive positioning, and customer segmentation.”
