San Marcos Academy: A smooth journey to academic excellence

Choosing the right boarding school for your child is one thing and breezing through the application process is another. Thankfully, the best advertisement for any school is its students and graduates. When families look into San Marcos Academy, it’s the smiles of its pupils and the success of its graduates that often seal the deal. An inside look awaits online.

The Academy’s social media channels show high schoolers strumming guitars during sing-along sessions with tiny tots in PreK; members of the Youth Leadership Programme learning about city government in the mayor’s office; or packing boxes for other students across San Marcos who go home on weekends to little or no food.

Located in San Marcos, Texas, this fully accredited, coeducational Christian school for boarding students in grades six through 12 and day students in PreK to Grade 12 is open to all. Paired with rigorous, yet enriching academics, each opportunity here prepares students to confidently take college or university by storm and ultimately keep the theme of success strong throughout their lives.

Many can confirm SMA’s ability to ensure outstanding outcomes. The seniors of 2022 — and of other years — continue to praise the student experience that made them. They’re headed for the likes of the University of California, Auburn University, Texas State University, Baylor University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Colorado, among many other esteemed institutions.

Becoming one of them has never been easier, thanks to SMA’s open-door policy — which steers clear of discrimination on the basis of faith, race, national or ethnic origins.  Applications can be submitted anytime, and due to the rolling enrollment option, new learners can be accepted throughout the year.

Comprehensive procedures and checklists are still set in place, consisting of aspiring learners’ general application, birth certificate, medical history report, and payment for the non-refundable application fee. Parents are expected to compile and submit a school transcript of grades, achievements or IQ test results — if such documents are available. A personal interview and a campus visit are requirements too, except for international students and out-of-state students. However, families from abroad are required to submit passport information and proof of financial responsibility.

“Our registration process was easy and informative,” says a new Upper School parent. “Everyone was so helpful and kind. I was afraid we wouldn’t have all the documents, but I was fully prepared thanks to their kind information beforehand. Our daughter was so happy, and though we both shed a tear when we parted, I left her in good hands and felt even more assured God lead us to the right place.”

Nestled between Austin and San Antonio, SMA’s picturesque campus typically provides parents with such comfort. They know that once they leave, their children will safely climb to the peak of foundational academic excellence among a diverse population of students from across the globe.

For grades six through eight, the Academy Middle School curriculum is just as challenging as it is enlightening, comprising lessons in fine arts, foreign language, and technology instruction. Outside the classroom, they explore music, sports, languages, the arts, and of course, their faith. At SMA, daily Bible instruction is open to all, as are twice-weekly chapel services and various other discipleship opportunities.

A holistic approach ensures every student enjoys the smooth transitions they deserve. Once they progress to the Upper School, they take on a seven-class period day — set in place to prepare them for college-level work. All are required to follow the Texas state-mandated course curriculum to graduate and/or obtain one or more endorsements in the following areas: Arts and Humanities, Multidisciplinary, STEM, and Public Service.

Honours classes in core subjects, advanced placement courses and dual credit classes through University of Mary Hardin-Baylor are available as well. It’s little wonder why several seniors graduate from SMA with a college transcript to boast, having earned up to 30 hours of dual credits; why 97.5% of last year’s graduates received the acceptance letters of their dreams; or why the class of 2021 achieved US$2.8 worth of scholarships.
