Quinnipiac University: Channelling students into 21st century careers

This explains why students are increasingly turning their gaze towards 21st century topics, specifically the kind covered in Quinnipiac University’s School of Computing and Engineering.

Since no two aspirations are the same, the school offers an array of undergraduate engineering and computer science programmes, which, according to the US News & World Report, are some of the country’s best. For aspiring computer scientists, it offers two pathways: a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Computer Science. The BS emphasises computer design and programming for careers like software developer or network administrator. It covers web development, data structures, cryptography, and more. Meanwhile, the BA programme takes an interdisciplinary approach, applying computer science to fields like business and design.

The BS in Software Engineering is a better pick for those who want to go further. Apart from coding, this programme teaches them the ins and outs of system design, quality assurance, project management, and testing too. The school’s state-of-the-art facilities provide an experiential and collaborative learning environment, with hands-on projects in network systems, security, and software design and development. 

The BS in Civil Engineering is equally experiential, giving learners hands-on exposure in the five main sub-fields of civil engineering: structural, environmental, geo-technical, water resource and construction management. In the BS in Industrial Engineering programme, students gain expertise in designing and optimising systems to enhance efficiency and quality across various industries while simultaneously earning a Certificate in Engineering Management. The flexible curriculum has optional concentrations in Automation Systems and Robotics, Healthcare Systems Engineering, and Ergonomics and Human Factors as well. 

Those more interested in designing, building, testing and improving mechanical systems and devices can pursue the BS in Mechanical Engineering instead. This programme can help them develop the design and analytical skills required to thrive in various fields — from aerospace, robotics and automotive to power and energy, manufacturing, and biomedical.

What all five programmes have in common is their emphasis on hands-on learning. For example, computer science students work in labs filled with advanced equipment, including four distinct internal networks. Similarly, civil engineering students use state-of-the-art facilities such as a fluids lab with a functional wind tunnel, an environmental workshop for water analysis, and a fabrication lab for creating prototypes and mockups.

Beyond classrooms, residential students can explore their passions at Quinnipiac through its Living-Learning Communities (LLCs). Open to all first-year students in the School of Computing and Engineering, the Computing and Engineering LLC provides a supportive environment for students to take on activities and opportunities that can make a positive impact at Quinnipiac and beyond.

The theme of practice persists throughout the year across Quinnipiac’s three campuses in Hamden and North Haven, Connecticut. From participating in events like hackathons to laser-cutting pumpkins for jack-o’-lanterns and testing the stability of gingerbread houses, the university is always spearheading fun, innovative ways to career-proof its learners. 

Its commitment to immersive learning experiences even transports students outside the US. Last year, professors Grant Crawford and Ruby ElKharboutly planned a two-week engineering excursion to Cairo, Egypt, that provided 10 to 12 students with a unique experience exploring the intersection of ancient Egyptian art and engineering. Professor Crawford had led similar two-week excursions prior that saw students travelling to Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. 

“This is just another way for students to have a unique cultural experience, look at the world a little bit differently, broaden their horizons, and develop themselves as individuals,” says Crawford.
