Everybody deserves a world-class student experience. Inequality may persist in many other areas of life, but education shouldn’t be one of them. Especially not when it comes to giving young people a shot at making their future better and brighter.
This is the ethos of Millersville University, Pennsylvania.
Starting as an institution driven by the ideals of teacher preparation and classical learning as essential elements of enlightened citizenship, Millersville has since grown to host more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs. Despite the rapid expansion of course offerings, Millersville continues to ensure every student, regardless of age, race or creed, is able to pursue and succeed in their studies.
From Fall 2018, out-of-state and international students may qualify for an automatic tuition reduction of US$6,000 per year upon admission to the university. This rate is renewable for four consecutive years (or eight consecutive semesters), provided students maintain good academic standing as determined by the institution.
For graduate students, Millersville offers graduate assistantships which not only contribute to intellectual development, but also entitle graduate assistants to a tuition waiver and a bi-weekly stipend during the academic year.
But these aren’t the only things that make Millersville one of the most affordable higher education providers in the US.
Affordability isn’t a concept solely limited to tuition. It also means getting the most out of your financial investment. This means going beyond how much student debt you have or how much you’ve paid in fees, looking into how much your financial investment will impact your future.
In this aspect, Millersville stands out.
Such a barometer looks into the quality of academic programs offered at an institution. Knowledge isn’t something easily measured, but there are certain certified metrics that can give us insight into how valuable a program will be for your graduate career.
One such metric is accreditation. Millersville and its respective specialised departments hold many; including the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
It’s also approved by the American Association of Universities. The Applied Engineering and Technology Management program is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE), the art and design programs by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the business administration program by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs (ACBSP), to name a few.
Another reliable metric come in the form of university rankings.
In 2018, the US News & World Report Best Colleges – one of the most respected sources in global college league tables – ranked Millersville University within the Top 30 Public Schools of Regional Universities (North). Quality in higher education may be a nebulous concept to quantify, but this ranking used 16 measures of academic quality that are widely accepted indicators of excellence, such as first-year student retention, graduation rates and the strength of the faculty.
The Online College Database has also recognized Millersville as a top college for teacher education. The university was ranked 38 out of 88 schools in the teacher education ranking titled Top Colleges in Pennsylvania Shaping the Next Generation.
These quality programs ensure the decision to study at Millersville pays off, but it’s often the university’s location and social scene that makes the study abroad experience truly unforgettable.
At Millersville, international students can look forward to living in one of America’s coolest cities, as labelled by Forbes. Located just three hours from New York City, Millersville’s home in Lancaster County (LC) is one of the “best-kept secrets” in the US. Gorgeous cobblestone streets line this borough that harbours a bustling food scene and is known as a cultural hotbed. All this is just a five-minute bus ride from campus.
Camaraderie is abundant on-campus, too. From club sports to athletics, to the more than 170 student organizations available, there are plenty of opportunities to get to know fellow Millersville learners.
A transformative setting
Ultimately, the student transformation from the first day they step onto campus is huge. This institution produces highly employable, productive citizens of the world who make waves once they graduate.
“From the first moment I stepped on this campus, I knew Millersville University was an extraordinary place—a vibrant community committed to the ideal that an education from Millersville University will transform students professionally and personally, at every level, across every college and discipline,” says Daniel A. Wubah, President of the university.
