Liaoning Normal University – Missouri State University: Business education from two different locations

Liaoning Normal University – Missouri State University (LNU-MSU) students get more options and opportunities. LNU-MSU connects two universities from different continents to provide a joint undergraduate business programme. In their first two years, students are based in LNU-MSU’s campus in Dalian as they work towards earning an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in General Studies from Missouri State University. They can then continue studying for a Bachelor of Science in General Business in Dalian or Springfield, the US city that’s home to MSU’s main campus.

Graduate Haoran Deng chose the latter. “In Springfield, I benefited from a different educational system, advanced facilities, and a multicultural student body,” he says.

At first, adapting to a new country and culture was challenging. But Deng credits his first two years in Dalian for preparing him well. Soon, despite switching to Information Technology as it aligned better with his interests, he was thriving. “This flexibility allowed me to tailor my studies to my evolving interests and career goals, making my educational experience more enriching and aligned with my aspirations,” he says.

Today, Deng is pursuing a graduate degree at Duke University — something that wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for his LNU-MSU degree. “My degree from LNU-MSU has significantly contributed to this academic trajectory,” he says. “The strong foundation in research methodologies and critical thinking skills that I developed during my undergraduate studies have been invaluable in my current programme.”

Deng believes Dalian and Springfield played complementary roles in his success. “In Dalian, I enjoyed a supportive academic environment with rigorous coursework and strong faculty support. The diverse culture and community enriched my perspective,” he says. “In Springfield, I benefited from a different educational system, advanced facilities, and a multicultural student body. This experience enhanced my adaptability and critical thinking.”

By choosing Springfield, LNU-MS students can change majors. You can move from General Business to other degree options such as Accounting, Economics, Data Analytics,  Finance, Information Technology,  Management, and Marketing, to name a few.

Though it sounds as if Deng is living his best life abroad, others like Wang Zhening are too drawn to studying and living in one of the most livable cities in all of China. “I grew up in the northeast of China. I like the climate and the character of the people here, and Dalian is one of the best cities here, so I chose to go to university in Dalian,” she says.

For Wang, her first two years here were eye-opening. She was exposed to a wide variety of subjects, such as accounting, history, psychology, public speaking, philosophy, economics and so on. “Some of these subjects are closely related to business, and some of them seem to be non-business but can better improve my abilities,” she says.

Being able to explore various subjects works for Wang. In fact, she prefers it compared to the more limited options in China’s education sustem. Her list of favourite classes thus far includes Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Philosophy. “I enjoy analysing the relationship between supply and demand in the market, which gives me a sense of accomplishment,” she says. “And I think economics, especially microeconomics, is very relevant to our lives, and I can apply it in my life.”

“What attracted me the most was the chance to meet professors from different parts of the world,” says Zhening Wang says. Source: Liaoning Normal University – Missouri State University

But what Wang loves most about LNU-MSU is how global it is. Her professors come from all over the world. “I really enjoy learning about different cultures, and our professors come from different countries such as the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, Singapore, Indonesia, etc., which is very appealing to me,” she says. “I get along very well with each of my professors, they are very intelligent people, and I learned a lot from them.”

Thanks to them, Wang’s English has improved a lot and she’s confident to take her next steps abroad. “LNU-MSU developed my English language skills, and it will provide me with an undergraduate degree from Missouri State University, which can help me gain admission to a well-known school,” she says. “At the same time, LNU-MSU has provided me with a good educational environment, which has enabled me to gain professional knowledge and become more responsible. I believe these will help me succeed in my next study venture.”
