International students, experience the difference in Australia’s Northern Territory

In most destinations, studying abroad can feel like a means to just earn a qualification, however in Australia’s Northern Territory, it’s a gateway to a more rewarding life. With a focus on a quality Australian education, employment and graduate outcomes, this unique study destination is perfect for international students seeking a future in a warm, relaxed and affordable community.

With over 100 multicultural organisations in the Northern Territory, diversity is celebrated. During 2023 Australia’s Northern Territory welcomed more than 5600 international students from over 70 different nationalities.

The Northern Territory’s close proximity to Asia, and quality education and training providers make it an ideal destination for international students to study, live and work. Upon arriving, international students soon feel at home thanks to a strong sense of belonging that helps to make them feel secure and confident.

In addition to the amazing lifestyle, the Northern Territory provides genuine employment opportunities for international students. Two recent graduates can attest to this. Both studied at Charles Darwin University; read their stories below.

Family ties transported Vaishnavi Jogiya from India to Australia. Her uncle, a resident, highlighted the Northern Territory’s similarities to her hometown in terms of climate and environment. It sounded like a great place to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Darwin University (CDU).

Reflecting on her time at CDU, Vaishnavi remembers her courses were high in quality, even amidst challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lecturers and staff provided an enriching and supportive learning experience. Although bidding farewell to her studies was difficult, she seized every opportunity to transition from student to professional.

“I started applying for a graduate program, and during that gap period I got a part-time job in a clinic, which was great,” she shares. “After a couple months, I got into the Entry to Practice Program at the Royal Darwin Hospital. That was the turning point for me, as I am now a registered nurse working in the Emergency Department.”

Her first few weeks on the job were challenging. Seeing this, Vaishnavi’s colleagues stepped up. “I was just too nervous to make any mistake,” she recalls. “I still remember a colleague who came to me and said ‘Vaish, you are a nurse now, you have done this before as a student. Believe in yourself. We all are here to help you’ — it touched my heart.”

Vaishnavi loves spending her free time taking walks at the Nightcliff jetty and exploring the outdoors with her friends. Her passion for martial arts thrives in local training sessions, which even resulted in her representing the Northern Territory in the National Karate Championship in 2022. Vaishnavi embraces the destination’s vibrant community spirit, enjoying multicultural festivals and bustling markets throughout the year. “It’s definitely the perfect place to study, work and live,” she says.
