Facing emerging challenges head-on

As industries shift dramatically to include more hybrid and offshore work options, many employees will need to rethink how to work efficiently in new systems and settings. Skills that are highly-valued in business such as communication, project management and execution, creative thinking, and teamwork have taken on different faces, and employees must be adaptable to meet the demands of an increasingly digital working environment.

The popular Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, ranked number one in Queensland in terms of employment outcomes, now comes with the option to complete the new Graduate Certificate of Project Management. The program is the first university-level qualification in Australia to hone in on skill development in asset management, and consists of four subjects that count towards the MBA — a sure way to make any applicant stand out on CVs.

Not one moment of learning is spent without real-world application in mind at the College. Led by professors and lecturers who have substantial experience in the boardroom, students will gain firsthand insights into current practices in business within Australia and the rest of the world, while expanding their network by connecting with peers from various backgrounds who are or will become future leaders in their respective fields.

Associate Professor Carmen Reaiche, who spearheads the Project Management modules, says it best when it comes to how postgraduate programs at the College can equip students to face emerging challenges in the workplace:

“The business field has been impacted by digital transformation and JCU has recognised this in the design of all the programs. We have kept upskilling in mind to train everybody, including our own staff, to navigate this communication process. This is not only about conference calls, but also about learning and engagement, how to present project management digitally, contract designs, and how to liaise with multiple stakeholders. Hybrid work is here to stay.”

What students have to say

A beautiful tropical paradise, North Queensland is Australia’s gem of natural wonders that include iconic sights such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest. The campuses at Townsville and Cairns boast pristine beaches, picturesque sunsets and an abundance of outdoor activities such as outdoor hikes, mountain biking, snorkelling, or scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef.

The lush natural beauty of North Queensland is a key driver behind the region’s tourism and economic development, hence providing more opportunities for businesses and jobs to flourish. The landscape is embedded into its economy, and JCU’s long-standing engagement with regional councils, community members, and industry stakeholders exemplifies the kind of collaborative efforts needed to herald a more sustainable economy rooted in responsible management.

North Queensland, Australia’s crown jewel of opportunities

“I think the difference in James Cook University comes from its rich traditions in understanding oceanography, the Great Barrier Reef, and tropical agriculture of the region. It’s all very connected to water and earth. Everything that comes off now in terms of sustainability in business, caring for the planet, and climate change — they seem to have been in the vocabulary of the locals for as long as I know.”
