Hargrave Military Academy Builds Character in Boys

Font

Hargrave Military Academy offers a structured college preparatory boarding school environment that has produced successful young men since 1909. Hargrave helps boys in grades 7 - 12 & Post Graduates realise their full potential, building leaders of character prepared for lifelong success.

As they rise through the Corps of Cadets, boys master organisation, structure, and discipline. They have defined roles and responsibilities. A clear set of rewards await exceptional performance from cadets; consequences when they fail to meet standards. Leadership opportunities add another layer of benefit: challenging each cadet to their best both in and outside the classroom.

In the classroom, the knowledgeable, thoughtful faculty prepare cadets to do more than just earn a high school diploma. The challenging and purposeful curriculum is built on Hargrave’s four pillars of academics, sports/athletics, character and spiritual development.

Cadets in grades 7 - 9 take their first steps at the Centre for Integrated Studies (CIS), where instructors coordinate their lessons to form a purposeful, holistic educational program that helps young men better comprehend and retain information. Grades 10 - 12 & Post Graduate focus on college preparation and life skills. Whatever their options after the Academy — basketball scholarship, West Point, Annapolis or beyond — they will receive the foundational knowledge to succeed at the next level.

Cadets of various faiths have attended Hargrave throughout the years. Twice weekly Chapel attendance is required of all cadets. Opportunities for spiritual development at Hargrave include the following: twice-weekly chapel, relational ministry, a Bible Survey course, optional participation in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, attending church services in the community, daily individual devotion time, and cadet individual and group devotionals.

During chapel, cadets sing hymns and contemporary Christian worship music, as well as listen from either the chaplain or an invited guest speaker. All cadets must complete a Bible course where they form a robust understanding of its intricacies and its practical application in their daily lives, regardless of their faith backgrounds.

Faith and Character

For example, the PG Basketball Team finished the year ranked third in the nation. In the Cape Fear Invitational, the Hargrave Track Team won the conference meet with several members qualifying for the regional and state competition. The Hargrave Swim Team also brought home a conference championship.

The Academy meets all requirements set forth by the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) for initial eligibility certification of its core courses and graduation requirements.

Facilities on campus are plenty. There is an Olympic-sized pool, baseball, football, soccer, and lacrosse fields, outdoor track, cross-country course, trap range, climbing tower, indoor rifle range, and many more.

These extensive athletic facilities support Hargrave’s four-pillar approach to develop well-rounded men. They stand out at a time where many schools are downsizing athletics. Here, cadets continue to have opportunities and experiences to achieve their physical best.
