Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship Program now open for applications

Young and mid-career Malaysians can now apply for the Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship Program which will fully sponsor a year of non-degree graduate-level study in the US.

The Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs will fund the Fulbright Program which will select those with the potential for leadership and commitment to public service. Full funding to cover international travel, tuition and fees, books and monthly maintenance stipend will be awarded to successful applicants.

For the non-degree program, Humphrey Fellows will pursue the tailored study program at the 14 participating host institutions. Fellows will work with their local campus coordinator and faculty advisors to plan their self-directed and individualized program and activities.

In addition to this, there will be professional enrichment activities such as conferences, training programs and work attachments. The work attachment component will expose fellows full-time to an  American workplace for a minimum period of 6 weeks.

The fellowships will be granted “competitively” in these fields:

Sustainable Development:

  1. Agricultural and Rural Development
  2. Economic Development/Finance and Banking
  3. Natural resources, Environmental Policy, and Climate Change
  4. Urban and Regional Planning

Democratic Institution Building:

  1. Communications/Journalism
  2. Law and human rights
  3. Public Policy Analysis and Public Administration
  4. Trafficking in Persons, Policy and Prevention
  5. Technology Policy and Management
  6. Human Resource Management

Education:

  1. Educational Administration, Planning and Policy
  2. Higher Education Administration
  3. Teaching of English as a foreign language

Public Health:

  1. Public Health Policy and Management
  2. HIV/AIDS Policy and Prevention
  3. Substance Abuse Education, Prevention, and Treatment

Since the program began in 1978, more than 5,600 men and women been honored as Humphrey Fellows. Approximately 200 fellowships are awarded annually, according to its website.

To be eligible, applicants must be a Malaysian citizen, hold a university degree which required at least four years of full-time study, demonstrate leadership qualities and commitment to public service, and have assurances of reemployment upon return to Malaysia. For the work experience component, applicants must show at least five years of professional experience prior to August 2018.

Strong English skills – minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 71 iBT – and limited or no prior experience in the US are required.

The application form and necessary documents must be submitted by Aug 13, 2018.
