The news might make it sound like the rising tide of inflation is making it much harder for international students to study in the US; but it’s still possible — thanks to dynamic institutions like Southern Utah University (SUU). By simply submitting an admissions application prior to its scholarship deadline, all applicants will be in the running to win valuable scholarships.
This inclusive and compassionate university even offers a range of scholarships exclusively for international students. The SUU International Student Scholarship Committee is in charge of rewarding the deserving, meticulously evaluating various factors such as academic merit (GPA), geographical diversity, and financial need. With this in mind, it’s clear that SUU goes above and beyond to act as a steadfast advocate for all learners keen on achieving their educational goals.
The theme of support extends far beyond the admissions process, too. Throughout the entire SUU journey, students are enveloped in an environment where dedicated faculty members go above and beyond to provide valuable insights and guidance. Their unwavering commitment is focused on assisting students in acclimating to life in the US and achieving success in their academic pursuits.
“If a student is willing to set aside some time to reach out to a professor, there’s absolutely no reason why they won’t succeed in that class,” says Dr. Jeffrey Miller, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences, who always keeps his doors open to those looking to share their concerns and overcome their challenges. “Everyone is coming from diverse backgrounds, and we need to make sure we are meeting them where they are and helping them get to where they need to be.”
Dr. Miller’s professional journey has spanned various prestigious institutions across the US; however, SUU provided an educational environment that was unlike anything he had encountered throughout his extensive career. As an institution that placed teaching, learning, and student success at the forefront of its mission, SUU was truly aligned with Dr. Miller’s own values and beliefs of what a university should be.
He believes that for an institution to stand out, it must stay relevant. Hence why there’s a new engineering building in the works, along with several new programmes inspired by current global events. These new qualifications are being designed in collaboration with various departments across SUU to continuously grow the university’s broad lineup of programmes — all of which have an interdisciplinary nature to meet the needs of evolving organisations.
“For example, we are joining forces with the School of Business, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics to offer a new FinTech programme,” says Dr. Miller. “We will all work together to come up with the curriculum. We are also working on a joint degree focused on aviation leadership — it will feature insights from our existing aviation programmes and our Master of Public Administration.”
When Jared Cooksey began his journey at SUU as a psychology major, it was easy for him to set aside everything he knew to chart a different path. “With each class, I got a better idea of what a career in psychology might look like. So, I spoke to faculty and friends from different programmes and found such a great pairing between psychology and economics,” he says. “I started out as a double major. Then, as I took more economics courses and excelled in math and business, psychology eventually became a minor.”
Throughout his journey, Cooksey explored pre-medicine, marketing, sociology, and theatre before deciding to focus solely on economics during his third year at SUU. Regardless of the switches, he was still able to complete his bachelor’s degree within four years, before pursuing a Master of Business Administration at SUU.
Exploratory journeys are common for those who choose to study at a university with an expansive lineup of academic offerings. SUU is home to over 150 undergraduate programmes, as well as 32 graduate and certificate programmes, and each is excellent in its own right. All of the School of Business’s programmes are AACSB-accredited. The MBA is popular for its ability to lay a solid foundation and the Master of Science in Business Analytics stands out for its emphasis on bridging the gap between business and tech.
SUU’s Department of Engineering is equally impressive, with all of its programmes holding ABET accreditation — including the Mechanical Engineering (B.S.) and the Civil Engineering (B.S.).
Accreditations reflect SUU’s steadfast dedication to upholding high academic standards — a priority set in place to ensure all students graduate ready to take the world of work by storm. Their methods work, hence why 97% of students find jobs in their field upon graduation. Wherever they go, they arrive ready, thanks to the experiential learning opportunities they took on as students.
“We connect students with internships, we host career fairs, and we nurture lots of partnerships with different companies who have strong relationships with our faculty members,” explains Dr. Miller.
“On campus, all of our classes are hands-on. For example, an engineering student’s first class might be in our Thunderworks Makerspace, which is filled with saws, 3D printers and laser cutters. Similarly, we have design students spending time on construction sites. Even if they won’t be executing these tasks in the future, at least they have an understanding of what it is and what it takes.”
This is precisely why the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences boasts a job placement rate of 95%. Dr. Miller has witnessed an undergraduate student landing an annual salary of US$180,000 fresh out of SUU. He’s even seen his aviation technicians receiving signing bonuses worth up to US$30,000 prior to completing their associate’s degree.
