Nestled in Owensboro, Kentucky, the state’s industrial, medical, retail and cultural hub, Kentucky Wesleyan College is a great launchpad for curious minds and ethical leaders. While there, many students have evolved into critical thinkers, effective communicators, and integrity-based professionals.
Founded in 1858, Kentucky Wesleyan boasts a long-standing tradition of graduating students who have garnered experience in their fields of interest, both in and outside of the classroom. Offering 30 majors and 13 pre-professional curricula, programmes at Kentucky Wesleyan are tailored to fulfil the aspirations of students and meet the ever-changing needs of the diverse industries they are entering. Whether your interests lie in biology, chemistry, or business, there’s a path waiting to be explored.
The biology programme covers the study of living things and their vital processes – a preferred pathway for those who want to become well-rounded biologists and zoologists, or go to graduate school. Most students earn the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology as a crucial step to get into medical, dental, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, optometry or veterinary school.
A chemistry major is also offered here. It includes an emphasis in each of these three areas from which a student is expected to choose one: Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Forensic Science and Professional Track. Whichever you choose, coursework is challenging and diverse, encompassing a wide range of subjects, from organic and inorganic chemistry to physical and analytical chemistry.

Learning is hands-on. For example, all biology majors are encouraged to undertake independent laboratory, field, or library research projects. Opportunities for summer research programmes and directed student research are available too. The same applies to chemistry majors, where students engage in cutting-edge experiments and have the chance to take part in research activities at various universities and national laboratories, such as the Universities of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Louisville, as well as at Kansas, Mississippi State, Ohio State, and Oak Ridge National Laboratories.
“We have students participate in a wide variety of job shadowing and internships with local health professionals,” says Dr. Kyle Besing, division chair of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “Opportunities for undergraduate research are available in biology, zoology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. We are also an extremely interdisciplinary division, and research projects that involve multiple fields of study can be created.”
Given the interdisciplinary nature of the sciences, Kentucky Wesleyan encourages students to explore combinations of majors and minors. Biology and chemistry, chemistry and mathematics, physics and mathematics, and biology and psychology are popular. Students are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to join the 3+4 accelerated pharmacy programme, in partnership with University of
Kentucky, allowing them to earn both bachelor’s and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees with one less year of coursework.
All pairings lead to career success when you’re a Kentucky Wesleyan graduate. “We have many alumni serving in the health field as physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists, physician assistants, optometrists, dentists, and even professors,” Dr. Besing says.

Career-readying business education
The Business Administration programme is one of four accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE). What this means is the programme meets the standards of preparing today’s business students for tomorrow’s workplace.
Anchoring the programme is a distinguished faculty of seasoned professionals who have navigated the corridors of the accounting, human resources, finance, and marketing industries. Their real-world experiences, woven into the curriculum, add a layer of authenticity that transcends abstract theories.
One such example is managerial statistics students who studied the impact of COVID-19 on local senior citizens through a research project with Owensboro’s Senior Community Centre. “We incorporate significant experiential learning, including corporate strategy simulations, operations simulations, human resource simulations, entrepreneurship simulations, international business simulations, internships, intercollegiate live case competitions, and service learning projects for local organisations/businesses,” says Prof. Danielle Woodward, Assistant Professor of Management.
Learning extends far beyond classroom walls. Guest speakers, immersive business tours, and targeted networking events impart invaluable insight to the practicalities of the business world. These experiences are transformative, shaping future leaders. You’ll also develop your soft skills through business writing, ethical decision-making, and interpersonal skill-building exercises, ensuring you graduate with a holistic skill set.
A testament to the programme’s effectiveness is the resounding success stories of its graduates. From a team securing a coveted third place at the Spring 2023 IACBE Live Case Competition to internships seamlessly transitioning into full-time positions, these narratives are a clear indication that a Kentucky Wesleyan College education is a stepping stone to professional success.
