Durham University: Historic, impactful and well-reputed

Set in the heart of an historic city in the northeast of England, Durham University is one of the UK’s most prestigious universities. It is well-known for its long, impressive history of academic excellence, outstanding research and the quality of its graduates.

Durham University is a truly beautiful and historic place to study and is situated within a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site includes the city’s magnificent cathedral that dates back to 1093 and many historic University buildings including an 11th century castle where students live during their studies. The picturesque site attracts visitors from around the globe and has been used as a backdrop for many blockbuster movies including the 1998 film Elizabeth, Avengers Infinity War and the Harry Potter series.

In 2021, Durham is leading the way in how it’s handling the disruptions wrought by the pandemic. Durham University has vowed that students will continue receiving a quality education either on campus or from their homes, without the need for deferrals. No plans will have to be put on hold, no student will feel disadvantaged in the midst of uncertainty, and every desired opportunity will still remain close in reach.

In close collaboration with the Durham Students’ Union, the University has identified a range of measures necessary to provide excellent academic support for all undergraduate and postgraduate students. To ensure students succeed, the University has a vast collection of online resources, specific subject guides, and an effective virtual support system set in place. Each policy and procedure, by design, ensures students achieve above and beyond expectations, as they would on campus.

Safe, supportive, friendly

Located in a place that inspires excellence, Durham University is a safe and supportive home to over 18,000 students from over 150 countries, and is currently ranked in the top 25 most international universities, according to the Times Higher Education’s yearly ranking for 2021.

Durham is a relatively small and compact city. This lets students move around easily as most things are just a short walk away, with no worry about public transport. The University also provides a free inter-campus bus that runs between the city and campus for anyone with a campus card.

A track record of excellence

As the third oldest university in England, years of experience sets it apart. Rankings are a testament to this. Durham University ranks among the world’s top 100, according to this year’s QS World University Rankings. A record 19 Durham subjects are in the World Top 100 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020. Times Higher Education World University Rankings recognises five Durham subjects, listing them among the top 100. The university excels in a number of other rankings too, cementing its reputation as one of the best in the world.

“Durham is one of the world’s greatest universities and one of the most distinctive. We aim to inspire our students and staff to achieve extraordinary things and I am delighted that this is recognised by our continued high standing in global and national league tables,” said Vice-Chancellor and Warden Professor Stuart Corbridge.

There are also numerous opportunities to engage in research here. Not just any research, but Durham research, which spans the world and beyond. From breathlessness to ancient manuscripts, from geothermal energy to the COVID-19 pandemic, the university produces world-leading and world-changing research.
