De Montfort University: Prepare for exciting careers in Tourism and Hospitality

If you love working with people and helping them see the world while feeling like a well-taken-care guest, a tourism and hospitality degree may just be for you. It’s a great way to learn skills such as teamwork and customer service — crucial in seizing the many opportunities that lie in this dynamic field, from holiday representative and hotel manager to tourism officer and travel consultant.

There are many options ahead for you — more so if you hold a De Montfort University degree. Located in the city of Leicester, only one hour North of London, the university is home to a Career team that was named Best University Careers/Employability Service at the 2021 National Undergraduate Employability (NUE) Awards. And in the same year, Times Higher Education ranked them among the top three universities for teaching excellence in the UK.

These achievements aren’t surprising, considering DMU’s programmes include the latest breakthroughs in research and best practices from industry. With these in hand, graduates often emerge with the knowledge, skills and experience employers seek — something you’ll find in its two International Tourism and Hospitality Management programmes. Both programmes have close ties to DMU’s Arts and Festivals Management programme, ranked number one in the UK for Hospitality, Event Management, and Tourism (Guardian University Guide 2023).

Readying you for exciting global careers

The International Tourism and Hospitality Management BA (Hons) prepares you for careers in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries. You’ll gain a deep understanding of current practices, opportunities, and challenges within the UK and international markets.

Your journey begins with a solid foundation in year one, exploring the history, theories, and current trends shaping the tourism and hospitality landscape. Expect a focus on sustainability, innovation, resilience, and effective leadership. Such early exposure will enable you to build critical thinking skills to tackle complex industry challenges and confidently make strategic decisions. Year two deepens your knowledge, introducing you to event planning and city tourism while setting you up for your third-year placement or dissertation and participating in a research visit to a major European city.

The final year focuses on developing entrepreneurial skills through a dissertation or placement. You can also use this year to advance your previously acquired knowledge and skills, explore destination marketing and place branding, and learn about niche tourism products such as natural, cultural, eco, and dark tourism. The programme culminates with the “Enterprise Project,” where you must develop a commercially viable business plan for a sustainable business.

The one-year International Tourism and Hospitality Management (Level 6 Top Up) BA (Hons) It’s open to students who have already completed either a Year two (Level 5) of a management or business-related degree course or HND course in management business; or mature students with non-standard qualifications, providing they have relevant experience to complement their qualifications.

This programme bridges the gap between your existing qualifications and a full bachelor’s degree, providing in-depth industry knowledge in marketing, branding, sustainability, and effective leadership. You’ll develop critical thinking skills to tackle complex challenges and make informed decisions at operational and strategic levels while building a strong foundation in transferable skills valuable across various sectors.

The programme curriculum features modules like Destination Marketing, Tourism and Hospitality Products, International Research Visits, and Dissertation. It goes beyond theoretical learning, offering unique opportunities to gain real-world experience through an international research visit to a European city. This allows you to apply your acquired knowledge and gain valuable insights into different cultures and consumer behaviours.

Regardless of your chosen programme, you’ll benefit from DMU’s innovative Education 2030 approach. By studying one subject at a time, you can dive deeper into the material, receive timely feedback, and better balance your studies and personal lives.

The best part? Both programmes are led by industry experts who are actively engaged in research. They ensure what you learn is up to date with what your future employers want and need.

Another thing to look forward to is the many experiences in store for you. You’ll work with travel agents, tour operators, airports, leading brands, and independent hotels, gaining firsthand insights into industry operations and challenges. This valuable exposure is further enhanced by industry guest lectures, workshops, and participation in events in collaboration with local, national, and European tourism and hospitality providers.

Tuition fees are 15,750 pounds, with all students receiving a minimum of 1,500 pounds scholarship. Interested? Apply to the International Tourism and Hospitality Management BA (Hons) or one-year top-up programme.
