Charterhouse School: 1,000 Journeys. One Exceptional Education.

“Finding a school for our children was something we agonised over,” says Sonia. “We scoured the UK looking for the right fit, but it was so hard to find what we were looking for.”

Like many families, they were searching for a school that could challenge their child and support them in equal measures. A place which marries academic ambition with kindness, and a global outlook with a close-knit community. One that doesn’t ask parents to choose between excellence and enjoyment but makes it possible for their children to have both.

“We wanted an environment that seamlessly integrated vigorous academics and intellectual development with guidance and care, a vast array of opportunities, and a global outlook with diverse perspectives, whilst fostering personal growth and a sense of belonging, close to London – and above all, it had to be fun,” Sonia explains.

Her search led her to the balance that defines Charterhouse School. Located in Godalming, England, it stands apart for combining exceptional results with a “try-everything” ethos. Pupils between the ages of 13 and 18 quite literally try everything.

Charterhouse buzzes with possibilities: 65 pupil-led clubs and societies, 19 sports, and 1,100 music lessons every year, alongside a wealth of opportunities in art, culture, leadership, service, and global learning.  Its 1,000 pupils explore with curiosity, uncovering passions they never knew they had. No two journeys are alike. At Charterhouse, education is personal, not one-size-fits-all – and in an ever-more complex world, that makes all the difference.

Tilly, an international parent of two children currently attending Charterhouse, saw this first-hand. “My son decided he wanted a school where he could play as much football as humanly possible and where he could socialise with friends, try new experiences, and push himself academically.”

And play football, he did. Yet, through Charterhouse’s try-everything spirit, he discovered far more, from Duke of Edinburgh expeditions to art trips and friendships within a community representing around 45 countries.

That ability to stretch, explore, and belong stems from what Tilly describes as “thoughtful, responsive, and experienced pastoral care”, a foundation that creates “a fun, relaxed, happy, can-do atmosphere of camaraderie.”

    Future-ready learning

The school’s pioneering FutureU programme is woven into daily school life. A central element of the Carthusian experience, it develops transferable skills (how to think, how to work, how to relate), professional knowledge, and the mindset required “to thrive throughout their later lives.”

Sixth Formers can pursue the Charterhouse Entrepreneurship Diploma, a Level 3 professional qualification accredited by the Institute of Enterprise & Entrepreneurs (IOEE), where they learn to design ventures, pitch ideas, and understand business strategy from the inside out. Much of this unfolds in The Hub, a purpose-built space that mirrors a modern university or corporate environment, complete with a lecture theatre, collaboration pods, and seminar rooms wired for innovation.

    Breadth with purpose

The Charterhouse “try-everything” ethos works in tandem with academic excellence. The same pupils who lead expeditions or present business pitches also immerse themselves in rigorous study across A Level and IB Diploma pathways. Charterhouse encourages a genuine love of learning, inspiring pupils to explore new ideas, follow their curiosity, and reach their full potential, not just to succeed in exams or gain entry to top universities, but to carry that passion and confidence into all areas of life.

Supported by expert teachers and the Futures Department, pupils receive individual guidance on university pathways, research interests, and career aspirations, from Oxbridge preparation to applications at elite universities in the US, Europe, and Asia. Over 4,000 past pupils offer mentorship from their current boardrooms, laboratories, arts studios, and NGOs worldwide.

“The Futures department is exceptional, and there is an ongoing drive for excellence, not through pressure, but by inspiring students to reach their full potential in a nurturing environment that emphasises the importance of growth. Plus, they often host inspiring speakers from all walks of life, ambassadors, to UN employees, even ex-prime ministers,” shares Sonia.

In 2025, more than 75% of GCSEs at Charterhouse were awarded grades 7 to 9 (A/A equivalent), including 60% at A* in Mathematics and Science. In the Sixth Form, both A Level and IB cohorts consistently outperform national averages. Among 2025 leavers, over 85% secured places at their firm-choice universities. Nearly 85% of UK applicants progressed to Russell Group institutions – Durham University, University College London, and King’s College London were among the most popular choices, alongside the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London.

At Charterhouse, every pupil charts their own journey, discovering passions and possibilities along the way. They leave inspired, confident, and curious, ready to embrace whatever challenges and opportunities the future may hold.
